Vacation home, a large garden is not just an area for a comfortable family vacation, relaxation, but also a place for the embodiment of ideas in the field of gardening.
Increasingly, you can see how the territory is decorated with shrubs and fruit trees, but still, decorative garden arches give a special decorativeness and sophistication to the site.
Read or watch our video to find out how we adapted a cheap, ready-made garden arch to provide strong support for growing vegetables. As with any vertical growing method, plant arches are a great way to make better use of the space you have. Stretched vegetables like squid can take up a lot of land, so teaching them heaven frees up soil space for other crops. Set them up to create a path or merge multiple arches together to create a stunning live focal point.
The arch can be absolutely any shape and any size, and everything depends only on where this element is located. The arches basically represent the entrance to another area of the garden, thus dividing the site into a work area and a recreation area.
Garden arches of flowers in landscape design
If you already have a garden arch, it is very easy to adapt it for growing vegetables and fruits, and this is what we are going to do.
Once you've gathered, push the completed arches about 16 inches into the ground, making sure they are packed tightly as they should be strong on windy days when they are leafy. If you want, you can check that they are completely vertical using spirit level so that heavy squash will not overbalance them. We tie our two arches together with cable ties to stiffen the entire structure.
Where to place the arch - it all depends on your imagination and budget. If the goal is to save the family budget, but at the same time make the interior unusual, then your option is an ordinary garden arch. If we talk about a more expensive option, then you should choose an arch made of wood, stone, forged.
Add cable ties to each horizontal rod and cut off excess for a neat finish.
The mesh hasn't reached the top of our arch, so we're going to create additional supports using heavy-duty wire. You can also use thick gardening thread. Attach one end of the wire securely to the front of the arc, then pull the wire horizontally along the arches, tying it to the middle vertical supports. When you get to the other end of the arch, tie it to a position and then run it about six inches.
Which arch is best?
If you are pursuing the goal of decorating the cottage with curly flowers, you want to zone the space with an arch, then you should not buy any arch that the seller offers you. Of no small importance is the quality of the material from which the arch is made, as well as its durability.
Pin it in place, then return to the front of the arch. Tie it up, run it another six inches, then turn it back to the opposite side. Repeat this process until you reach the top of another mesh.
Add plenty of well-rotted compost to the planting area. Set your squash plants in position and bring the stems up to the net. You may need to tie the stems loosely to start with, but they will soon find their way up the grid.
Metal arch (forged)
Such an arch is made of very thin rods, a profile, and durable pipes. The wrought-iron arch is the most beautiful option arches, but also the most expensive. Territory of the dacha or garden plot can be used not only for growing various plants and ornamental flowers. Thanks to modern decorative structures, it can also serve as a resting place and simply be an aesthetically perfect area of your home. We are talking about garden arches for climbing plants, and other flowers. These are fairly simple structures that, nevertheless, perform a lot of functions. We will not only tell you which ones, but also teach how to make arches for a summer residence and a garden with our own hands according to our detailed instructions with photo.
Garden arch: main types, construction features and functions performed
The garden arch is a decorative structure for garden plots. Most often, it is a simple structure of two vertical beams without the presence of a foundation and an arched or straight horizontal beam.
The arched structure itself is a fairly stable structure, which does not have a reinforced frame. Yes, this is not required, since the main function of a garden arch is to support a plant, flowers, or a vine.
Although the construction of the arch does not require any complex technologies, nevertheless, it is necessary to take into account some features:
- The structure must be suitable for growing plants.
- The height of the arch should be at least 2 meters, so that a person of average height can calmly sit under it.
- The arch should be at least 1.2 m wide. This is necessary in case it will be used as a support for the growth of climbing plants. If this parameter is not observed, then in the future the effect of the neglect of the structure may be created.
- The frame should not only be strong, but also have an aesthetic appearance, so that in the absence of plants (in cold weather) it should also be “pleasing to the eye”.
- Compliance of the selected type of construction with the general color of the garden plot.
Arch for climbing roses
Arched structures can be classified according to several criteria:
- According to the material used for the manufacture of the structure: arches made of wood, plastic, metal, stone, combined.
- By the shape of the frame: arches; pergolas (a volumetric structure consisting of similar elements fastened together); trellises (vertically arranged lattices); complex designs.
- By location: insulated structure; several arches; tapestry "wall"; arbor-shaped construction.
A garden structure is not only a separate decorative element for a plot, but also a way to complement an already existing composition. In addition, the garden arch performs a number of important functions:
- Serves as a reliable support for plants.
- Helps to create an appropriate architectural style.
- Supports load-bearing posts.
- Zones the garden area effectively.
- Serves as an excellent base for children's swing.
- Serves as a lamppost or a place to relax.
Making a garden arch with your own hands
The construction of a garden arch is a fairly simple job, but, like any other, it requires careful preparation and high-quality execution.
Metal arch
Determination of the dimensions of the structure and the selection of a suitable material
There are no strict restrictions and any standards, other than those described just above (the arch should be about 2 meters high and about 1.2 m wide). The maximum permissible width, which does not violate the overall proportions of the structure, can be about one and a half meters. This will be enough. As for height, the taller the structure, the less graceful it becomes. Most often, garden arches are made with a height of no more than 3 meters.
After the dimensions of the structure are determined, you can proceed to the choice of material. So, metal The garden arch is a durable construction, very easy to install and quite sturdy. But it has one significant drawback - susceptibility to corrosion.
As material for wooden arches are suitable for both timber and untreated wood. Such structures are less reliable than metal arches.
Plastic the arch has a very attractive price and is easy to install. She is not afraid of corrosion, moisture, deformation. And to model the structure, you only need a soldering iron.
Wooden arch as a garden decoration
Choosing and preparing a place for an arch
Now you should think about where to place the structure, so that it decorates the site and at the same time does not violate the overall integrity of the existing picture. It can be an excellent entrance to the site or to the territory of the house. Try to install the arch above so that it becomes a kind of tunnel on the way from one part of the site to another (a pergola is perfect for this).
Advice. Bulky structures are not suitable for a small garden plot, since they can simply visually reduce the area. The way out in this situation will be a trellis, it will perfectly decorate the territory of the garden and at the same time it can be used as a gazebo by adding a small bench with soft pillows to the arch.
An existing one (for example, a concrete or tiled area) can serve as a foundation for an arch; ordinary soil will not be the worst option. The most important thing is to prepare the foundation for installing the arched structure. The working platform must be carefully cleaned, leveled (when it comes to earthen pavement), transfer the dimensions of the structure to the site and apply the markings.
We mount a wooden arch
The wooden arch is very easy to install. For this we need: wooden bar about 4 cm thick (at least), glued wood about 10 cm, nails, gravel, glue.
Forms of arches for plants
Schematically, the order of work is as follows:
- We dig in the beams-racks in a pre-selected and prepared place.
- Crushed stone is poured into the base of the wooden racks, and the wood remaining above the surface of the soil should preferably be treated with resin or burned.
- We fasten the upper parts of the racks with a crossbar in the shape of the letter P, connect the sides with jumpers like ladders using screws.
- On top of the resulting structure, we mount an arcuate crossbar, which we fasten in the same way as the previous one.
- We cover the finished structure with a primer and paint with a special compound for wooden surfaces.
- The final touch remains - we decorate the arch with plants, flowers, etc.
We mount a metal arch
Consider, as an example, the process of creating a garden arch of a simple model: from two arc reinforcing rods connected by metal rings. We need the following materials: reinforcing bars (at least 10 cm in diameter), primer, flexible wire, rope. So, schematically, the order of work is as follows:
The scheme for creating a metal arch
- To begin with, we will make an arched blank from the reinforcement. You can use a simple template made of 1/4 meter long metal pins driven into the ground along the desired contour.
- Now we start creating connecting rings for already prepared reinforcing struts. We cut 9 pieces of reinforcement 90 cm long and bend them into rings using a pipe bender.
Advice. If you do not have a special tool for bending metal at hand, simplify your task: use straight pieces of reinforcing bars as fasteners for posts. This option looks a little simpler, but it is no less attractive and practical.
- We deepen the metal racks into the ground to a depth of at least 40 cm.
- We fasten the reinforcing rings-fasteners for the racks using a flexible wire, having risen from the ground level by at least half a meter. We observe the distance between the rings within 20 cm. The structure obtained in this way will be sufficiently strong and stable.
- In order to protect the finished garden arch from corrosion, be sure to cover it with a primer and then a layer oil paint... This completes the process of creating an arched structure.
In the process of reading this material, you could make sure that creating a garden arch is a simple process that even non-professionals can do. Use the information received competently and you can create a high-quality decorative structure for your garden with your own hands. Good luck!
