You can change your apartment beyond recognition with the help of a small redevelopment and original decoration. This is exactly what designer from Krasnoyarsk Yulia Gavrilova did when she was faced with the need to create interesting interior in a typical Khrushchev building.
A two-room apartment with an area of 44 square meters was transformed with the help of interesting colors and correct placement furniture.
The main problem of Khrushchev apartments is that in a small area it is very difficult to place the necessary furniture so that it is not only functional, but also looks good. Owners of such apartments should be attentive to the decor and arrangement of furniture, and think through everything in advance.
The married couple, who turned to Yulia for an original design for their apartment, did not limit her either in colors or in the materials used. The special wishes of the owners of the apartment, which Yulia took into account, were that the interior should look bright and positive; they also asked to use natural materials as much as possible and to allocate a special place in the apartment for an aquarium. The designer, taking advantage of the freedom of creativity, created a bright and stylish modern interior in a small two-room apartment.
Transformation of Khrushchev
Khrushchev apartments cannot boast of ergonomics; the layout of apartments sometimes seems ill-conceived. Despite the fact that only the external walls are load-bearing, it is not possible to completely redevelop the apartment. SNIPs prohibit moving a kitchen or bathroom, and the silhouette of the apartment itself does not provide the opportunity for a complete redevelopment.
But small adjustments can still be made. Yulia Gavrilova expanded the bathroom and kitchen, removing the meaningless corridor, and created a built-in wardrobe in the hallway. All partitions and doors were removed between the kitchen, living room and hallway, which made it possible to expand the space and make it more open. All zones interact with each other, smoothly flow into one another, going around the bathroom in the shape of a cube.
Free space gives the interior lightness and freshness. The designer actively used white color to visually increase the area of the apartment. At the same time, the floor and part of the wall are made of laminate with a pleasant wood texture, which gives the interior warmth and homeliness.
Living room in Khrushchev
The original color scheme makes the living room incredibly stylish and modern: the combination of purple and ocher yellow fills the living room with warmth. Contrasting color combinations always give the interior freshness. Unusual wallpaper with a graphic pattern they attract attention and even a little hypnotize; they add an additional note of rhythm to the design of the living room.
Only one wall is covered with such interesting wallpaper, so the space around the edges seems wider. This interesting “trick” with visual deception is continued by the mirrored cabinet doors, which also increase the space and block the light in the room. One of the walls is made to resemble brick and painted white; this element gives the interior not only freshness, but also modernity. Such walls are typical for fashionable style loft, in this interior its purpose is to emphasize the comfort of the rest of the apartment.
The small dining room located in this area deserves special attention. Due to the right choice furniture it does not clutter up the space. A small round table and chairs with thin legs fit perfectly into the living room interior.
Kitchen in Khrushchev
The kitchen remained in the same place, but became larger. The dividing partition was removed and a piece of the corridor went to kitchen area. Also, the space seems larger thanks to the light tiles on the floor and backsplash, and the colored “mat” of tiles on the floor unifies this area, “collecting” it.
It is worth paying attention to kitchen furniture with wooden facades. The apartment owners' request for natural materials was not left unfulfilled. Paneled cabinet doors look cute and cozy, and the blue color gives them nobility.
Bedroom in Khrushchev
The color scheme of the bedroom is also original: the designer used purple and lime color. This combination makes the room elegant and brings freshness to the interior. The main “star” of this room is the geometric print wall, which attracts a lot of attention. Due to this, the small size of the room and its irregular proportions are not so noticeable. The furniture in this room is done in white to keep the feeling of lightness.
Another “trick” of the designer is to use paintings on a white background, which give the wall volume. In addition, they perfectly continue the eco-theme. Few and discreet accessories complement the bedroom design and give it the necessary charm.
Even the smallest bedroom cannot do without a wardrobe. To slightly correct the proportions of the room, the designer placed it along a short wall. Note that the closet does not end next to the doorway, it continues above the door. The extra space for rarely used items is not noticeable at all.
Bathroom in Khrushchev
The bathroom also grew in size thanks to the space left over from the corridor. In such a bathroom there is already room for both a washing machine and corner bath, and installation under the toilet.
Contrasting dark stripes add volume to the room, while tiles with wood texture add warmth and comfort to the interior. Mirror without frame and active use white also allow you to visually enlarge the space. But small details in the interior will be unnecessary; they will overload the bathroom, so the designer tried to minimize their number.
Before you start the actual renovation, you need to decide on a few things that will allow you not only to avoid unnecessary expenses, but also to get the most convenient, comfortable and functional housing on the available 15 and 8 (approximately) “squares”.
Deciding on functionality
First of all, what will each living room be used for? functional purpose. Two factors can be considered main:
There's one more thing important decision, which is worth taking - bathroom renovation. If you compare all the advantages and disadvantages, the combined bathroom looks more attractive. If you abandon the bathtub in favor of a shower (you can take it with a deep tray) or install a corner bath, you can save space for installing a washing machine.
Ways to change the design of a Khrushchev building - redevelopment
One good way Khrushchev house design - combining an entrance hall, kitchen and living room. But experts advise not to completely combine the kitchen with the living room. But even if you combined the kitchen and living room, the floor near the kitchen should be highlighted in a different color. If you put laminate flooring in the living room, then put linoleum in the kitchen.
In a smaller room, you can remove the wall a little and leave space there only for the bed on which you will sleep yourself. It is also worth removing the wall between the toilet and the bathtub and installing a shower stall. This way you will save a lot of space, which is enough for a washing machine.
Also redesign the location of the bathrooms and sewer pipes. Then the old tiles are chipped and high-quality waterproofing is performed. The ceiling can be made glossy. All these transformations are suitable for changing the design of Khrushchev. In addition, suspended ceilings with an air duct will feel good there.
Another way to remodel and change the design of a Khrushchev building is to enlarge the bedroom at the expense of a study. To do this, you also dismantle the wall between them and block one of the doors. It turns out to be a spacious place with two windows. You can also put sliding walls between them. This is possible when two or one person lives in an apartment.
What can you come up with without redevelopment?
If redevelopment of the apartment is unavailable for some reason, then you can find elegant solutions without changing the boundaries interior spaces. Bedrooms in Khrushchev

As for the light in the bedroom, it needs to be given a special place - there may be several lamps. They can be placed on the bedside table, on the side walls, on the wall next to the bed or on the floor
Hallway design
The smallest room in the Khrushchev building is the hallway. Increase its area, perhaps making wider doorways to adjacent rooms or reconstructing them into arches. You will receive not only a visual, but also a practical increase in area - due to the fact that more natural light will come in, a small room will find a second wind.
If the hallway is narrow in width and long, you can divide it into two zones - the first will have a standard hallway with linoleum, and the second will become a transition to the room. As for furniture, a wardrobe or shallow horizontal shelves covering the entire wall would be perfect here.
Kitchen design in Khrushchev
Kitchen sets with the popular L-layout are best suited. In this case, one side of the set will rest against a window or wall, and the other will end with a refrigerator. It would be logical to place a sink at the junction of the two sides.
