Fabrics for upholstery are divided into technical, such as calico or linen, and facing (decorative and furniture). Technical fabrics are used for interior covering (upholstery of the bottom of chairs, linen niches, etc.). Upholstery fabrics are characterized by the following properties: high abrasion resistance, high density, water- and dirt-repellent impregnation.
Furniture fabrics include acrylic, cotton, linen, hemp, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, silk, viscose, and wool.
Depending on the composition, fabrics have different properties and for the right choice it is necessary to understand which of the consumer properties of furniture fabric are most important.
In the production of furniture, both natural and synthetic fibers are used, because even modern furniture fabric cannot exist without synthetic additives that increase the performance of the furniture, but the base, usually cotton or linen, must be natural components. At the same time, synthetic additives can significantly extend the service life of fabric furniture upholstery and give a new texture to the material. Unlike ordinary cotton fabrics, modern upholstery materials, also consisting of cotton, are not subject to significant shrinkage: the upholstery practically does not change its shape after wet cleaning or washing, while upholstery treated with a special composition during the production process may not be afraid of dirt and even stains . The colors of modern upholstery fabrics are quite varied. Not least of all, this is due to the fact that the process of applying a design to fabric has become much simpler and much cheaper. Today this happens using transfer printing, or by applying a design using thermal paper. Designers have to compete to create a variety of printed designs that can satisfy almost any consumer taste.
How to choose fabric for upholstery? Some of our tips:
If there are dogs, cats or small children in the house, then it is better to choose flock.
Flock is a fairly inexpensive pile fabric, or as it is also called “anti-claw”. In addition, flock is very convenient and practical, and even if the fabric is light, for example, if the upholstery was dirty, it can be cleaned with a damp sponge. Flock, like other synthetic furniture fabrics does not absorb moisture, but at the same time “breathes”, so it can withstand even the dog’s wet paws, almost any food contamination, etc. Furniture covered with this material looks neat and elegant and is pleasant to the touch. The features of this material include high wear resistance. The main advantages of furniture made using flock is that it is little susceptible to moisture and dirt.
Jacquard is very durable, it is woven on special machines, and sometimes in order to create a pattern or texture, the thread can pass in 2, 3, 4 layers in one place of the fabric. A thread of one, then another, then a third color comes to the surface, forming a convex pattern. The use of synthetics in such fabric only improves its aesthetic and specifications. Jacquard chenille is one of the most beautiful views fabrics. Jacquard manufacturing technology allows you to create unique multi-layer weaves that provide a unique texture and pattern of these fabrics. At the same time, jacquard chenilles are good to use for living rooms, children's rooms and bedrooms: they are hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly and quite affordable, and the variety of their textures and colors will give unlimited scope for creativity.
Furniture tapestry is one of the most popular among furniture fabrics. Due to its excellent physical properties, as well as its relatively low price, tapestry has always been in great demand among furniture repair shops. A unique feature of the tapestry is one of its subtypes - landscape tapestries. They have a large pattern and are suitable for decoration themed interiors. Furniture matting is a relatively recently introduced type of upholstery fabric. It resembles dyed burlap, but at the same time it is much softer and more pleasant to the touch. A fiber twisted from several threads is pulled into a strong base. The threads may be different color and thickness, then the fabric will be sort of rough and motley, and maybe even monochromatic. Matting is stronger than some other types of fabrics, and its texture is advantageous for decorating interiors in a country style or with an appearance of deliberate negligence. Furniture fur - imitates animal skins in color and pile.
Some useful tips:
periodically clean the sofa with a vacuum cleaner - it is better to remove local dirt immediately;
to avoid streaks, the stain remover should be applied from the edges of the stain to its center;
do not use different stain removers at the same time - try to use alcohol-containing components as little as possible;
Remember that expensive upholstery requires appropriate care.
Fabric types:
First of all, we must remember that fabrics differ in purpose. According to this parameter they are divided into:
- Integumentary;
- Upholstery.
Covering tissues: They are used to cover spring blocks, as a base flooring for soft internal elements (at the EVANTY factory it is spunbond), used for the back side of covers, and upholstery of the back of upholstered furniture. Composition: cotton, linen and other natural fibers, as well as synthetic materials.
Upholstery fabrics:
These are special furniture fabrics that decorate the visible surface of the products. It is these fabrics that are a kind of “clothing” of the sofa chosen by the buyer. In addition, fabrics are divided into woven (i.e. those produced by weaving longitudinal and transverse threads); and non-woven (which are obtained by bonding layers of fibers in various ways).
Characteristics of fabric based on raw material composition
Polyester/Polyester (PES) is the general name for polyester fibers and materials. Polyester fabrics have excellent functional characteristics. These are lightweight, breathable, quick-drying, wear-resistant fabrics that perfectly retain their shape, are resistant to light and heat and are easy to care for. Polyester can be used to produce fabrics of various textures - matte or shiny, depending on their purpose. Polyester perfectly imitates the texture of natural fibers and is most often used in the production of velor, smooth fabrics and flock-like bases. Polyester perfectly imitates the texture of natural fibers.
Nylon/Nylon (PA) is a synthetic fiber. It is durable, elastic, resistant to abrasion, repeated bending, and the action of many chemical reagents. Nylon is similar in properties to polyester, but is most often used to make pile.
Acrylic/Acrylic is a synthetic fiber. In many properties and appearance it is close to wool, and is resistant to light, acids, weak alkalis, and organic solvents. Most often used for the production of chenille.
Viscose (CV) is a knitted synthetic fabric. Viscose-containing products perfectly allow air to pass through and absorb moisture, and have good heat-shielding properties. Viscose gives the fabric softness, smoothness and silkiness. Disadvantages - large loss of strength when wet, easy creasing, low wear resistance.
Cotton/Cotton (CO) is a natural fiber of plant origin, used for spinning and weaving, either alone or with other fibers. Soft, durable material, easy to wash if pre-soaked. In direct sunlight it may lose strength and therefore requires protection. In the furniture industry, cotton is used mainly with the addition of synthetic threads to strengthen the fabric. The ratio of natural and artificial fibers can be quite varied - from 90/10 to 10/90 percent, respectively. Fabrics with 100% cotton content are also used, but quite rarely, since they have relatively poor light resistance and can shrink. The wear resistance of cotton fibers is lower than that of synthetic fibers. Cotton is the most common fiber used in the production of upholstery fabrics. It is used both in printed fabrics and in chenille, flock, microfiber, and velor. It can be part of both the base fabric and the pile. Availability of cotton upholstery fabrics- a big plus, since this significantly increases hygiene indicators, i.e. The fabric is hygroscopic - it allows air to pass through - it “breathes”.
Characteristics of fabric by type of thread
Threads used in the production of furniture fabrics can be simple (regular 72-fiber thread), braided (consisting of several simple threads woven into a braid), fluffed (regular thread is fluffed in an air flow, making it thick and fluffy). In the highest price category are chenille and bouclé threads. Chenille thread is two ordinary threads woven into a braid, with scraps of the same thread sandwiched between them. Boucle is a thread obtained by creating fixed loops on it, which requires a special machine. Standing apart from the range of furniture fabrics are artificial suede, produced both by woven and non-woven methods. The highest quality and most expensive are woven suede. The fabric, woven from a special thread (microfiber), is processed using a brushing machine, which splits the thread into fibers of varying heights and frequencies. The price of such suede largely depends on the degree of processing: the longer the process takes, the more expensive the fabric.
Abrasion resistance
Abrasion resistance is measured by the number of abrasion cycles. There are several ways to perform the abrasion test. The most common is the Martindale test. The principle of the test is as follows:
A piece of fabric to be tested is secured to a smooth foam surface;
The abrasive (rubbing material) is felt attached to a metal disk; The abrasive disc begins to rub the fabric in a circular motion with little force. One circular movement corresponds to one cycle. Tests on smooth fabrics are carried out until three torn threads appear, on pile fabrics - until the fibers on the base are completely abraded. As a result, each fabric sample is assigned an abrasion coefficient. The higher this coefficient, the better, the longer the fabric will last. Different fabrics, depending on the raw material composition and their type, have different abrasion thresholds.
Fire resistance
The fire resistance of fabrics is checked by the following tests: 1) Two pieces of foam rubber are taken and covered with the fabric being tested;
These parts lean against each other at an angle of 90 degrees, imitating a sofa;
A lit cigarette is placed next to the parts.
Tests are carried out three times;
If in all three tests the cigarette reaches the filter and no ignition occurs, the test is considered passed.
Naturally, the effects of decay will be visible on any fabric, but your apartment will remain safe. 2) The so-called cigarette test: a lit cigarette is placed on a piece of fabric for five seconds, and the test is passed if no visible marks remain on the fabric.
Fabric construction and density
By design, fabrics can be single-core or double-core. In the first case, the fabric is made on a machine that simply interweaves the warp and weft threads according to the principle of a wicker basket. This is the cheapest design. In the production of double-warp fabrics, patterned chenille or jacquard are sewn together on a loom with a single warp. This can be done in one pass, when the two bases are fastened together with through-stitching, or in two passes. Today in the production of upholstered furniture, chenille (including expensive ones) are widely used, having a base and an upper front layer. With medium and low quality firmware, the bases may peel off from each other. With high quality, the stitching of dibasic chenille is quite frequent, and the fabric turns out dense and solid. There is also volumetric weaving, in which the warp and weft are intertwined in a special way. Manufacturers resort to it when they want to protect themselves from counterfeits. The technology for producing such fabric is so expensive and complex that it is only available to reputable companies. As for the density of the fabric, it is closely related to its design and is determined by the weight square meter fabrics. Everything is quite simple here: the more threads per unit area and the more layers, the greater the specific gravity of the fabric - or its density. It is believed that the minimum density for furniture fabrics is 200 g/m2.
Color fastness.
This characteristic shows how resistant the colors are to light, moisture and friction. The quality of dyes used in dyeing directly affects the performance (during tests) and consumer properties of the fabric. Will the color of the fabric on your sofa change over, say, a year? And in five years? Do you need to worry about this at all? The color fastness indicator will help you answer this question. If it is 5 and above, then you have nothing to fear for your sofa, but if it is below 3, you should think about it. The standard indicator in Russia is 3.5, but we recommend choosing fabric with an indicator of at least 4. Upholstery of upholstered Italian furniture. Covering upholstered Italian furniture with fabric is called a cover.
Furniture fabrics are usually divided into categories that are closely related to price and their performance properties.
For example, the Wittmann company has categories S A B C D E F G H. The cheapest “S” is recommended for Italian furniture for public use: hotels, offices, restaurants, etc. Color palette not rich, the design of Italian furniture is discreet. But these fabrics are of increased strength, they even come with the inclusion of metal threads. In addition, such upholstery will not fade or wear out for a very long time.
Further categories of upholstery material are distributed according to the (Latin) alphabet: “A” is cheaper, “N” is the most expensive.
Categories differ in color, design, price and fabric composition.
Options - from a banal mixture of cotton and viscose to natural silk. Each fabric has a certain density, expressed in grams per linear meter.
A very important parameter is what experts call “fabric abrasion.”
Another important point- resistance to fading.
Today you can change a modern fabric cover yourself. Such covers are equipped with Velcro, so if you suddenly want to update your favorite chair from a set of Italian furniture, you can order a new cover at the manufacturer’s factory or, if you want to save a lot, it’s better to contact our upholstery workshop, we can produce covers for upholstered furniture at very affordable prices, from any required fabric.
