You have probably noticed that different wallpapers in the same room give a different effect of space: the room can look lighter and more spacious, and in some cases darker and smaller. And it can remain light, but there is less space or dark, but cozy and comfortable. How to choose wallpaper so that their design does not fall out of modernity? It seems to me that many are already tired of plain wallpaper in indistinct pastel colors. Moreover, the market is simply oversaturated with such an assortment of patterns, textures and shades of wallpaper that it’s just that your eyes run wide in stores.
Finding wallpaper for a small room is not that difficult if you follow certain rules in choosing a pattern and shade, which are based on understanding the illusions of graphics and tone in an enclosed space.
And so, a well-known fact: light and plain wallpapers increase the amount of light in the room, which expands its volume.
Light plain wallpaper increase the space of the room
Yes, the room is getting wider, more spacious and conservatively boring.
What wallpaper to choose in a small room with a pattern?
Let's see which drawings give what effect:
Drawing can be divided into several subtypes.
Wallpaper with a low contrast pattern for a small room
Drawing on such wallpaper can be small (1), medium (2) and large (3).
If you take plain white wallpaper, as 90% (I will talk about the maximum below) is a possible option for expanding the space of a small room due to walls, then all subsequent options will lose in the ability to make the room larger.
So, the option “light wallpaper with a small non-contrasting pattern” (see the picture with the number 1) causes the least harm to the spaciousness of the room. The average non-contrasting drawing will bite off the space a little more (look at the picture with the number 2), but, nevertheless, it is not critical.
A special pest of the volume is a large pattern. Although the ability to use it correctly can turn all its shortcomings into advantages.
The least harm to the space of the room will be caused by the inept use of a large, low-contrast pattern (see the picture with the number 3).
In order for a large drawing to be appropriate, only one wall is assigned to it, and a bed or other low furniture is placed against the background of this wall.
This rule applies to any large drawing.
Wallpaper with high contrast and low pattern density for a small room
Increasing the contrast of graphics also reduces the space of the room, but this harm can be compensated for by the rarity (by location) of the picture.
So a rare contrasting pattern will noticeably enliven the room, and does not greatly narrow the space (see the picture with the number 4). The middle pattern with the same conditions bites off the “air” more strongly than the first one, but again, within the framework of the design, it can “pull the blanket over itself” (see the picture with the number 5). Well, a large contrasting, albeit rare ornament should not be pasted over the entire room, this does not give any advantages (look at the picture with the number 6). And even if you have a gigantic room, especially if there is little furniture in it, a large pattern will only hurt.
Wallpaper with high contrast and pattern density for a small room
The high contrast and density of the pattern is particularly damaging to a small room. Even a small amount of furniture in such a room will give the effect of clutter.
The way out of this situation is the same as with a large pattern: one wall, against which the furniture is located. The "gravity" of the picture in this case becomes an anchor for your "ships" - furniture, where everything else will be spacious.
The “one wall with any pattern” technique can be used not only when you like a particularly charming ornament, but for example, a delicate, non-contrasting medium-sized pattern. The advantage of such a wall is that it will look not only behind the furniture, but also free from it.
Finishing about the drawing, I note that we talked about light wallpapers, but the whole principle is transferred to dark and bright ones, taking into account the influence of colors, which we will talk about now.
The lighter, paler and colder the color, the more it expands the room. The darker and colder and brighter the shade, the less light and space it gives to the room. But it is worth noting that if the room is already small and not lit, then dark colors will give it a club gloss, chic nightlife and its own temperament independent of light.
And if you do not want to give up the expanse of light colors, but dark shades are close to you, then use dark wallpaper according to the principle of a “large” pattern. Very interesting and cozy interiors are obtained if one wall (against which the furniture stands, otherwise there will be an effect of narrowing the space) is dark, and the rest are light.
And the last option that will add 100% space to your room is photo wallpaper, preferably with a 3D effect. This is a great way to get rid of dullness and create your own personal world in your small room.
