It would seem that the question: how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor, should not arise at all, because what could be easier - to put the material on the floor.
In fact, in order for the repair to look complete, so that the work does not go to waste, and the laid material does not have to be changed in the near future, you need to immediately take into account some features and do everything right.
Linoleum is one of the most common types of flooring.
Firstly, this is due to the financial component.
Secondly, the ease of installation: you can lay linoleum with your own hands, without resorting to the help of specialists.
Thirdly, it is an additional floor insulation, not whimsical in cleaning.
It should also be noted that it will be correct to lay linoleum in one sheet, that is, its width should be equal to the width of the room in order to prevent the formation of joints.
Of course, you can lay it on a different principle, but the joints must be fastened carefully so as not to disturb the aesthetics of the coating.
There are several varieties of linoleum:
- Polyvinyl chloride material consists of four layers, manufacturing technology involves the creation of a foam base. Such a coating has good sound and heat insulation properties;
- Fabric - is a durable and very plastic material;
- Colloxylin - in addition to its flexibility, it has a special brilliance;
- Alkyd material can crack over time, while remaining very durable;
- Baseless - withstands mechanical loads, the floor structure becomes homogeneous;
- Natural linoleum can be used in any room, in any room. Absolutely harmless, but short-lived.
How to choose a material, see the video.
When buying linoleum, it would be right to first look at all its characteristics, the material of manufacture.
It is better to take it with a small margin (at least 7 cm), to create a durable coating, the minimum thickness should not be less than 3 mm.
Preparatory stage
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor begins with the preparation of the base. The considered flooring is distinguished by its flexibility, so over time it takes the form of a base.
If the base is uneven, then the aesthetics of the floor as a whole is violated. Therefore, the first step is to start revising the wooden floor.
Preparation begins with the identification of all defects: the presence of rotten and creaking boards is checked, cracks, dents, gaps between the boards, etc.
If there is at least one of the listed defects, then you will have to work a little and level the surface.
The old floor covering will need to be removed if the floor has been painted, hence the paint removal. This can be done with a spatula and a building hair dryer.
The fastening must be strong, and the heads of nails or self-tapping screws should be slightly recessed. This is done so that the surface of the linoleum is not damaged during operation.
Preparation also implies the need to fix creaking floorboards. Fasten with nails or screws.
If the floorboards continue to creak, then problem areas (not the entire floor) must be opened and replaced with new ones.
All cracks, gaps and crevices are treated with mastic. Preparation is completed by leveling the surface.
You can level the base with a grinder, or you can use a planer. Leveling is completed by cleaning the surface of debris.
You can level the floor with your own hands with the help of plywood. This material must be glued to a special glue for parquet or to ordinary PVA.
Adding a bit of gypsum to the glue will help make it more viscous and provide better adhesion of the plywood to the surface.
Plywood can additionally be fastened with nails (preferably self-tapping screws, in order to prevent floor creaking in the future), the caps of which are recessed by a few millimeters.
Plywood is laid so that there are no four sheets at the junction, they should be slightly shifted.
Thus, a more reliable fastening of plywood to the floor is provided, and a gap of 2-3 mm should remain between the sheets (expansion joint).
After the plywood is laid, it is necessary to level it: the joints are sanded, the cracks are puttied, all the resulting debris is removed.
The use of plywood makes it possible to achieve a more reliable base, creates additional noise and heat insulation, and later, during the operation of linoleum, plywood will not allow the decorative flooring to sink, and contributes to the creation of the aesthetics of the floor.
This completes the preparation of the base, you can start laying the flooring itself.
Material dimensions
As mentioned above, it is desirable that the width of the room and the linoleum match to avoid the need for docking. To do this, you need to correctly measure the room.
It should be noted right away that it is necessary to take linoleum according to the maximum dimensions of the room, the width of which is considered to be the longest wall. What does maximum dimensions mean?
For example, on one side of the wall there is a recess for the battery, on the other - a doorway, so these do-it-yourself measurements must be taken into account.
The material is bought on the basis that the size of these recesses is added to the width (length) of the room, as well as a small margin (7 cm) in case you have to align the linoleum on the walls.
The stock is made on both sides, that is, both in length and in width.
The walls are very rarely even, so you have to do the alignment yourself.
In no case should you cut the flooring in advance, if you remove the missing difference by applying linoleum patches, then the whole appearance and the strength of the coating deteriorate.
If it is not possible to lay linoleum in a single strip, it is necessary to select the dimensions so that the joining of the strips is in the center.
In addition to the usual allowances along the edges, you will need to make a supply of material in order to align the pattern.
The floor covering can shrink, change in size a little, this is also a good reason to purchase material with allowances.
Linoleum must be spread on the floor to level it. It would be better if you leave it like this for a day or two. These actions are necessary to ensure a tighter fit to the base.
Ways of laying linoleum
To date, there are several ways to lay linoleum:
- The material can be laid without using glue. This method is the simplest. The technology lies in the fact that the linoleum laid out on the floor straightens out within a few days, after which it must be fixed around the perimeter of the room with skirting boards. You can put linoleum in a corner without the formation of bubbles by slightly incising it. The simplicity of this method does not determine the strength of the flooring. Flooring without the use of glue is used in small rooms, and this method does not guarantee an even floor covering;
- Flooring using double-sided tape. The technology is as follows: first, glue the tape around the entire perimeter to the wooden floor, then lay the linoleum. Once again, we carefully try on, after which, for convenience, we roll it up to the middle, tear off the protective layer of adhesive tape and, unbending the roll, glue it to the base. This is done carefully so that wrinkles and bubbles do not form. It is also necessary to ensure that no debris gets under the coating itself. When the canvas is glued, then all the excess is cut off, skirting boards are installed;
- Adhesive flooring is the most durable method of attaching linoleum to the subfloor. This technology is preferred for large rooms. First, linoleum must be laid on the floor to ensure its alignment, for a tighter fit in the corners of the room, the material is slightly incised. We glue linoleum in parts. First, we bend the first half of the canvas and apply glue to the base with a roller or brush. We wait a certain time (about 20 minutes). After that, you need to put the linoleum on the base, level it with your hands, and then proceed to gluing the next part of the canvas.
The gluing procedure ends with cutting off excess material and installing skirting boards; at the junction with another room (in the doorway), you can additionally attach the threshold rail.
If you have to use a two-lane option for laying the material, then it is necessary to ensure a beautiful and reliable joint of the canvases. This is most easily achieved by overlapping (10 cm).
One canvas must be bent and glued to the base, the same steps are repeated with the second canvas. In the place where two layers are formed, using a ruler and a knife, you need to cut both layers.
Thus, a junction of two sheets of material imperceptible to the eye is created, which is processed by cold welding.
The process of laying linoleum can be viewed on the video.
The need for a substrate
Linoleum underlayment is necessary in cases of providing additional sound insulation, if plywood is not used to create a more even coating, if additional floor insulation is needed.
The wooden floor is a good thermal insulator, so additional insulation is not required for it.
As already mentioned, the substrate can smooth out the unevenness of the base, if there is no time or opportunity to make a high-quality leveling of the floor.
The substrate is of several types:
- The jute backing has the ability to absorb excess moisture, so it can be used in appropriate rooms. Such a substrate provides resistance to rotting, mold, and also to burning;
- Cork underlay is a good option for rooms without heavy furniture. Such a substrate, in comparison with others, is the least durable material, however, it acts as an additional insulation;
- Linen substrate will be an excellent option as a prevention of mold and fungus;
- The combined substrate, consisting of wool, jute and linen, has a good density, but loses its qualities over time.
Today you can buy linoleum with a substrate glued to it, which will greatly simplify the installation of the material.
The substrate can act both as a heater and as a sound insulator, which is important for creating home comfort.

Linoleum flooring remains one of the most comfortable, pleasant and unpretentious types of flooring. Its practicality is also characterized by its wide application and installation on various types of substrates. Therefore, many will ask how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor.
How to put linoleum on a wooden base
What kind of linoleum to put on a wooden floor
Before laying linoleum on a wooden floor, you must select the appropriate type of linoleum.
Important! Before you go to the store, do not forget to measure the room. At the same time, add 10 cm to the resulting length and width to facilitate the installation process.
Linoleum laid in one piece will be much easier to care for
There is a huge range of material on the market with different web widths - from 2 to 6 meters. But household flooring in most cases has a width range of 2-4 meters. In this case, it is best to use a solid canvas for flooring, because:
- Covering the whole is much easier.
- Get a complete floor covering.
- There is no need to buy decorative plugs at the joints of the canvases or use an adhesive composition.
In this case, the material can be different not only in characteristic dimensions, but also in structure, base and other features.
- on a wooden floor, you can put various linoleum. You can use flooring with a foamed PVC base or fabric. The difference is that the fabric base gives the coating plasticity and is the simplest option with a fairly high level of strength. And the foamed base has higher rates of noise and heat insulation;
The process of spreading linoleum
- it is more practical to take material without a base, which has improved resistance to various mechanical loads;
- environmental friendliness. It should be borne in mind that a product made from natural raw materials will be 100% safe for health, but with a shorter service life. Experts say that synthetics are not particularly harmful to health. To believe or not is up to each individual;
- thickness. A 4 mm thick coating on a wooden floor can last a sufficient period of time, while it cannot be damaged during installation.
As it probably became clear, when choosing, you need to evaluate many parameters. Not all the best qualities of a product can go in one set, so you may have to give up something in order to win in another.
Revision of the old plank floor
So, the trip to the construction market ended successfully: linoleum was purchased in sufficient quantities, you can proceed to the assessment of the old plank floor. An audit is required before laying linoleum on a wooden floor.
Linoleum in an old wooden house must be placed on a solid foundation
To do this, you need to walk along it, and best of all, jump to check the condition of the floorboards and the lag system. Squeaks and wobbles of the floor can be corrected by tightening with self-tapping screws. In addition, the audit of the state of the floor includes the following steps:
- visual inspection. The color of the floorboards is natural, without characteristic changes. If there are places with blue, then you can verify the quality of the wood with a screwdriver. Strong wood cannot be pierced so easily.
- Fungus and mold. Normal humidity is characterized by the fact that it should not contain fungi, mold and other microorganisms that can harm the health of family members. You need to check in the gaps between the floorboards.
- Bark beetles. This is another one of the possible problems that can easily affect natural linoleum. Cork flour will be to the taste of pests. In their presence, it is necessary to process with special compounds.
- For a more accurate check, you need to remove a couple of floorboards from different parts of the floor and inspect their underside. For efficiency, you can tap with a hammer. A dull sound will indicate the presence of rot. Is it possible to lay linoleum on a wooden floor with rotten boards? The answer is no.
- Horizontal and even coverage. Linoleum will need to be laid on a flat base.
Qualitatively carried out preparatory work will be the key to durable flooring in general, regardless of how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor. The health of family members will also depend on this. As noted, mold has an extremely negative effect on humans.
Foundation preparation
After the audit is completed, you can proceed to the direct preparation of the base. We lay linoleum on a wooden floor after the following steps and work:
- Removal of old paint. If the floorboards were covered with paints and varnishes, then they need to be disposed of. A layer of paint will interfere with the subsequent stages of installation and preparation of the base.
- Deepening the heads of self-tapping screws and nails. Nail nails so that they cannot harm the canvases. In this case, it is best to replace the loosened nails with screws of a larger diameter.
- Scraping the surface if the base is quite strong, but has irregularities. Floorboards often change their surface: they swell or sag in the middle. To make the surface horizontally flat, use a grinder.
Before laying the coating, you need to sand the surface
- Putty floorboard gaps. Putty is necessary to prevent unhindered entry of moisture to the base of the canvases. It will also be necessary to do the same with nail heads: they must be hidden with a layer of putty.
Attention! If the floor has strong differences in height, then it will not be possible to achieve horizontal evenness by grinding. In such cases, resort to other methods of alignment.
Plank base leveling methods
You can imagine two simple ways to level the plank floor for laying linoleum:
- Self leveling compound. You need to use mixtures that are designed specifically for plank bases. In this case, the solution will level itself in level, which greatly facilitates the process.
- Wood boards. Laying linoleum on OSB, fiberboard or plywood is very convenient. This helps to level the surface, as well as to achieve greater strength, because the loads will be distributed over several floorboards at once. For fastening, you can use adhesive or self-tapping screws.
The final step in preparing the base is cleaning the surface. At the same time, it is not necessary to use an additional waterproofing layer or insulation material with linoleum with a good underlay.
Linoleum preparation
You can do your own flooring
It is worth noting some features of the transportation and storage of linoleum before starting installation work:
- Rolls must not be bent during transfer. Bends will form creases, which will turn into cracks during operation. Therefore, you should not buy long rolls if there is no free opportunity to bring them to the upper floors of an apartment building.
- After the base is ready for laying, you need to lay the canvases at the place of laying and let it rest for a couple of days, while leveling it from the center.
- Storage and installation temperature must be at least 16 degrees. Humidity is considered optimal at 40-60%.
Here are some simple tips for storage and transportation conditions. After the linoleum has acclimatized, you can proceed with the installation with your own hands.
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor
There are several ways to lay linoleum on a wooden floor:
- Without the use of an adhesive base. This installation method is suitable for solid canvases, which are fixed along the perimeter of the room with skirting boards. At the same time, there is a limitation on the area of the room - 12 square meters. That is, a 3x4 m canvas will be easier to lay than to glue linoleum to a wooden floor, while in the doorway it must be fixed with a threshold. If there is no real threshold, you can purchase a decorative bar. The disadvantage of this method is that the coating wears out faster, and waves can form on it.
- Double-sided tape. This method, oddly enough, is widely used. A double-sided adhesive tape is glued around the perimeter of the canvas and in several strips across the entire width, on which linoleum sits.
- Glue method. This linoleum flooring is used on a wooden floor for rooms with an area of more than 20 square meters. Dispersion adhesive can be used, which is applied to the entire area, because it has a weak strength. Reactive glue is used like double-sided tape, while the canvas is fixed using a dot method. After the installation is completed, it is necessary to wait 7-10 days until the glue is completely set, and only after that put the room into operation.
Attention! To ensure a secure fit of the coating laid on the adhesive or adhesive tape, you can use a roller.
If laying linoleum on a wooden floor with a solid canvas is impossible, then you have to use two or more pieces of linoleum. At the same time, the canvases are overlapped on top of each other, cut along the ruler with a knife and the seams are joined. There are the following methods:
- decorative threshold. The seam will be clearly observed, in addition, the threshold can cause certain inconvenience;
We nail a decorative threshold at the junction of two rooms
- Double-sided tape. Glue like mounting around the perimeter, which does not provide high strength and durability;
- cold welding. There are two types of adhesive with different degrees of viscosity that form an even sealed seam;
- hot welding. This method is used with commercial grades of flooring because thin linoleum can melt easily. It is not very safe to use it on a tree.
Do-it-yourself installation of linoleum on a wooden floor with your own hands is not at all difficult. It is worth remembering that high-quality styling is the key to durability.
A short video on how to properly lay linoleum:
Self-laying linoleum on a wooden floor requires knowledge of many features and rules. If you follow them during the execution of work, you will absolutely get a smooth and beautiful floor covering.
Floor bases made of wood pass cold, moisture and sound well. In this regard, for their arrangement it is required to select such types of linoleum, which are characterized by high protective characteristics. Currently, the construction market offers consumers the following types of coverage of interest to us:
- Fabric based. Very durable and at the same time plastic material with two layers - protective (it is at the top) and fabric (from below), it is recommended for laying in living quarters.
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is made from modern polymers on a heat-insulating, fabric and foam basis. Such material is considered ideal for wood floors. You can put it in any room of your home.
- Alkyd. This linoleum has a base of synthetic or natural materials, it is made from resins, to which minerals are added. Alkyd products are rarely used for wooden floor bases, as creases and cracks often appear on their surface during operation. This is due to the low plasticity of such a material.
- Four-layer foam. Linoleum of high strength and durability with excellent thermal insulation performance. It makes little sense to lay it in residential premises. It is designed for laying on objects where there is a high traffic of people and high humidity is constantly present.
- Rubber. The top layer of this coating is made from rubber of different shades, the bottom layer is made from a composition of recycled rubber products and bitumen. Such linoleum is very waterproof and plastic. It is most often used in production and industrial premises. It is not used in residential buildings.
- On a sound and heat insulating basis. The top of such products is made of PVC film, the bottom is made of reinforced foam or felt. Their cost is relatively high, but the performance characteristics are considered excellent for residential premises.
Fabric backing
Thus, if you decide to put linoleum on a wooden floor, it is best to purchase polyvinyl chloride material. It's great if it has several layers, as well as a heat and sound insulating base.
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor requires really careful preparation of the surface of the latter. The material described by us should be mounted on an exceptionally even base. Even four-layer high-strength linoleum inherently remains quite elastic and relatively thin material.
During operation, it takes the form of the surface on which it lies. It is clear that the presence of tubercles and other irregularities on it will not contribute to the long service life of the material.
On uneven areas of the floor on linoleum, cracks will appear over time, and there it is not far from breaking or wiping the coating.
Cracks in linoleum
Before laying, you will need to examine the floor base, remove and fix (or simply replace) boards that have become unusable (creaking, rotten, unstable, and so on). It is advisable to treat the wood with some kind of high-quality bioprotective compound, and also perform the following steps:
- remove the old paint from the wood with a spatula (if the process goes slowly, you can use a building hair dryer to heat the coating);
- remove all skirting boards in the room;
- sweep all dust and debris from the floor, vacuum it, then thoroughly wash and dry it;
- put patches on the gaps in the base, if their width exceeds 4–5 mm, and putty all chips and small cracks;
- deepen screws and nails in wooden boards by 5-7 mm, and then walk along the floor surface with a grinder to level it as high as possible.
If, after such preparation of the base, serious differences in height (more than 2 mm) are still noted on it, it will be necessary to additionally level the wooden coating. Popular ways of performing such work will be discussed below.
The easiest way is to buy a special self-leveling compound that is being developed for wood floors. It must be applied to a well-sealed substrate. This means that you will need to putty any gaps on the floor as carefully as possible. The procedure for adjusting rough coatings with your own hands is as follows:
- Impregnate the dry prepared base with a primer, which is designed to improve adhesion between the composition and the wooden base.
- Cover the walls near the floor surface with insulating material.
- Glue the joints of the wall surfaces and the floor with polystyrene foam.
- Install a plank (made of wood) in the doorway, which will serve as a limiter for future flooring.
- Then, on the floor, you need to lay a reinforcing mesh with an overlap of 5-6 centimeters and fix it on a rough base with a construction stapler.
- Stir the self-leveling compound with water (choose the correct proportions, guided by the instructions for the mixture) and pour it onto the floor.
- With a rubber mop or a spiked (again, rubber) roller, distribute the composition over the base, striving to ensure that it evenly covers the entire floor.
- Now you need to wait until the mixture dries.
Self-levelling compositions are not suitable for leveling floors with large height differences. If the old floor base is particularly uneven, it would be correct to use another method, which involves laying a special substrate on the wood with your own hands.
The backing material may vary. The most commonly used plywood (moisture resistant for kitchens and bathrooms, ordinary - for other living quarters), MDF sheets and chipboard products. The thickness of the substrate is 5–8 mm.
Moisture resistant plywood
Plywood (or other material) should be laid on the floor so that its sheets are offset relative to each other by about half their length. Make sure that there are no gaps between the individual products. But at the walls you should leave a small gap (about 1 cm).
Before laying the substrate, we treat the floor base with special mastic or a mixture of building gypsum and PVA glue, which perfectly fill the unevenness of the floor. We mount plywood products from above, fasten them every 15–20 cm, the heads of which are desirable to deepen as much as possible into the sheets, and then puttied and, if desired, sanded.
Many experts advise to go through the joints of plywood sheets with a planer and putty even small gaps between them. After that, floor paint (quick-drying) or hot drying oil is applied to the substrate, waiting for the surface to dry, and then laying the linoleum coating.
Laying linoleum material on a wooden base is allowed in different ways:
- With fastening on an adhesive tape (double-sided). Perhaps the most popular technique, which is relatively easy to implement with your own hands.
- Without gluing - not the most reliable, but very simple way of laying.
- With the landing of the material on the glue - the best technology for large rooms and premises.
Let's see how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor using double-sided tape. The scheme of work is as follows:
- On the perimeter of the room, and then on the entire surface of the base, stick adhesive tape (make a kind of lattice of adhesive tape, maintaining a distance between its individual strips of about half a meter).
- Remove the paper film-protection from the adhesive tape and lay the linoleum. Don't shoot all the film at once. Remove it only in those areas where you are currently laying linoleum. Then remove the next part of the film and lay the next piece of material again.
- Smooth out each laid part of the linoleum surface.
Linoleum flooring on wooden floor
If done correctly, linoleum flooring will serve you for many years.
Greater operational durability is characterized by products that are planted on glue. Do-it-yourself laying of material in this case is carried out as follows:
- You mark up the linoleum and cut it.
- Lay the flooring on the subfloor.
- Wrap the material with the base up from part of the floor area and along the edge that you wrapped, put a mark - a line.
- Apply the adhesive (use a notched trowel) to the substrate without going beyond the marked line.
- Lay the linoleum on the glue and manually roll the surface (across and then in the longitudinal direction).
- Once again, smooth the bed material, using a roller this time.
Do the same with the subsequent parts of the linoleum sheet. Note! When laying several sheets of material, it is necessary to lay each subsequent piece overlapping the previous one (by 1.5–2.5 cm). So you get well-joined seams and you can cut both edges with high quality. Cutting is recommended to be done 48-72 hours after laying the material. Such an operation is performed with a sharp knife and a metal long ruler.
Linoleum flooring without adhesive tape and glue is not recommended. With this technique, sheets of material are spread on the floor and pressed with skirting boards around the perimeter. It is clear that the method does not provide reliable fastening of the coating. It can be used exclusively in small areas (10-12 "squares"), and even then with caution.
A few general rules to follow when laying linoleum:
- Work is carried out in a room heated to 16-18 ° C. Such a temperature should be in it 2–3 days before laying and maintained at the same level for the same period after linoleum flooring.
- The roll with the material is kept in the room where the material will be laid for at least a day. During this time, linoleum has time to "acclimatize" in the room.
The owners of apartments with concrete floors do not have questions about changing the flooring, but how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor?
It should be noted right away that it is possible to lay the coating only on a strong floor, with strong ceilings, and not with rotten logs.
At the same time, the appearance of the boards practically does not matter - you can level the base, but this requires a substrate.
But work begins, of course, with preparation.
What fixtures and materials will be required?
- knife with a sharp blade;
- notched trowel (wood or metal);
- 2 meter ruler;
- double-sided tape or glue - depending on how you decide to glue the linoleum;
- smoothing roller;
- special cold welding for joints;
- scraping machine or planer - with their help, the preparation of the base is carried out, you can
- align the boards with your own hands;
- plywood, fiberboard or OSB (future substrate);
- screws or nails;
- putty, with which the alignment and sealing of cracks is carried out.
How to properly prepare a wooden floor for laying the coating?
To glue / lay linoleum on a wooden floor, preparatory operations are necessary, in particular, repair and alignment of the existing structure.
The amount of work can be estimated only after a thorough inspection of the existing coating.
Preparation before laying the material requires evaluating:
- How firmly the boards are fixed - for this you can walk or even jump with effort;
- Is there any rotten or damaged wood - the boards must be strong, natural shade;
- Is there a fungus on the surface or rust on metal fasteners (then it is impossible to lay linoleum);
- No damage caused by woodworms. If traces are found, it is better to treat the surfaces with bioprotective preparations;
- Absence of foci of rot in the bearing logs;
- Is there a creak when walking on the floorboards - if there is such a problem, then it is better to sprinkle the joints with talc or graphite powder.
You will need a new floorboard to replace the rotten one - if you leave everything as it is, then the rot will quickly spread to the rest of the structure.
Do-it-yourself preparation involves removing old paint, deepening fasteners, eliminating bumps and distortions in height.
Then the preparation and leveling is carried out by creating a new durable hardboard and plywood flooring:
- On the logs (dry unedged board with a section of 40x80 or 40x100), you need to lay several layers of plywood. The distance between the lags is maintained within 400-500 mm. One layer of plywood 12 mm thick will suffice, or two if the sheet thickness is 6 ... 8 mm. When using two layers of plywood, lay the plywood so that the joints do not match;
- Self-tapping screws are used as fasteners for plywood - they are twisted so that the caps enter the thickness of the material, and do not stick out;
- At this stage, the wooden floor is carefully leveled under the linoleum - the plywood base must be strictly horizontal, which can be checked by the building level;
- All formed joints are sanded, puttied and sanded again after drying. From above it is also possible to lay fiberboard;
- Alignment is carried out without additional heat and waterproofing in most cases, since these functions will be performed by the substrate under the linoleum.
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor may also involve another preparation method - the base of the floor, before laying linoleum, can be leveled with an appropriate self-leveling compound.
It cannot be said that this solution is better, because the mixture will completely block access to wooden elements.
However, if you stop at this option, do not forget - you need a mixture specifically for wooden floors, which will be easy to put with your own hands.
Whatever method you use for leveling, you need to remember: in order to cover a wooden floor with linoleum, the base must be dust-free, that is, clean and dry.
Criteria for choosing linoleum for installation
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor requires careful choice of coating.
Actually, you can lay flooring from any class of material with your own hands, but choose the right linoleum based on the intensity of its operation.
If you change the design of the room quite often and the associated repairs do not cause you concern, then you can choose a household-grade material that will last 3-5 years.
Of course, leveling the base using plywood and fiberboard does not have to be done every time, but replacing the flooring is fraught with difficulties.
Therefore, it will be correct to immediately lay a semi-commercial class coating, with a protective layer thickness of up to 0.6 mm.
In this case, you can level the base once by laying plywood and fiberboard, and then forget about repairs for at least 10 years.
When choosing linoleum for laying on a wooden floor, you need to pay attention to the pattern.
Artistic imitations of parquet or bamboo look great, but in large areas there will definitely be joints, which means that before gluing the linoleum, you will have to align the borders of the pattern, and this can lead to an increase in the amount of waste.
If you want to minimize leftovers and simplify work, then it would be right to use a coating without pronounced patterns - for example, imitating jute, sand, granite chips.
Putting such linoleum with your own hands is very simple - you just need to choose the required roll width.
Do not forget that you will need not only plywood and fiberboard, but also a special underlay for linoleum - it will even out the smallest surface differences, serve as additional thermal insulation and make the use of the new floor even more comfortable.
A thick and dense substrate made of fiberboard or pox is absolutely necessary to lay linoleum on a wooden base, because it transmits cold, moisture and sounds too well.
For this reason, the substrate must be made of a synthetic material with low thermal conductivity and good resistance to moisture.
Properly made substrate will eventually allow you to accurately and evenly lay linoleum.
For do-it-yourself work, it is not advised to use a coating thinner than 3 mm - the thing is that the wooden base is very mobile.
Even when you can properly level it, the top coating will still be subject to shear and tensile stresses, which means that thin linoleum can simply be torn.
And do not forget that you need to not only level the base (which will require fiberboard and substrate), but also properly prepare the linoleum.
It is transported exclusively in a twisted, and not folded, form, otherwise creases will remain on the surface.
After transportation, the material is rolled out on the floor to level, and then left for at least a day to acclimatize - this allows it to take its final dimensions in accordance with the level of humidity and temperature in the room.
So, the preparation has been made, the wooden base with a fiberboard substrate is clean and even, the material has been selected and rested - it remains only to clarify how to put linoleum on a wooden floor.
For do-it-yourself work, it is better to use a single piece, cut to fit the area of the room with 8 mm gaps around the perimeter.
The gaps are subsequently closed with skirting boards and allow thermal and moisture expansion for the coating.
The humidity of the base is necessarily controlled - linoleum is not laid on a wet floor, otherwise mold and microbes will develop on the top layer (fiberboard substrate).
It is not necessary to glue linoleum if the area of the room is less than ten square meters. meters. If joints are inevitable on the surface, then they are cold welded, PVA glue or double-sided tape.
To ensure the evenness of the joints, parts of the coating are cut, which will require a sharp knife. For this, the canvases are overlapped at the junction and cut to the base, through the layers.
The joints are glued either by tightly pressing against double-sided adhesive tape, or with an adhesive composition applied to 4 cm of each sheet in the direction from the joint.
Then the linoleum is pressed tightly - so that the glue comes out. After the glue dries, it is carefully removed with a knife.
Cloths can be further smoothed with a roller, thus eliminating irregularities.
The final stage of installation is the installation of skirting boards, which will additionally fix the linoleum around the perimeter and emphasize the stylish design.
Many people are interested in the question: how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor? The material is durable, hygienic and low cost.
Linoleum has a wide range of color shades, and therefore this coating can fit perfectly into almost any style of interior. The material can be laid on any base, but it must be prepared in advance. If you plan to lay linoleum on wooden floors, then you need to prepare for a large amount of work. One of the main features of PVC coatings is high elasticity. It should be understood that linoleum will repeat all the flaws of the base. Therefore, the seams and gaps between the boards will definitely need to be eliminated.
Materials and tools that will be needed for laying linoleum on a wooden floor:
- adhesive mixture;
- boards;
- plane;
- grinding machine;
- putty;
- plywood sheets;
- self-tapping screws;
- simple pencil;
- notched trowel;
- roller;
- long ruler made of metal;

Which linoleum is better to choose?
Linoleum can be divided into the following types:
- Linoleum from polyvinylchloride.
- Four-layer linoleum on a foam basis. This coating is able to provide good sound and heat insulation. It is durable and strong. The only drawback is the poor flexibility of the material. Such linoleum can be used in rooms with high humidity.
- Linoleum based fabric. This material is flexible and durable.
- Linoleum based on sound and heat insulating materials. The bottom layer consists of felt or artificial materials. The top layer is PVC film.
- Linoleum without additional base. It has a homogeneous structure, is not afraid of moisture.
- Alkyd coating. Made from alkyd resins. As an additional basis, natural or artificial materials can be used. The material is non-plastic, and therefore cracks and creases may appear.
- Rubber cover. The bottom layer is made of bitumen, and the top layer is made of high-quality rubber. The material is plastic and waterproof. Linoleum of this type is used most often in industrial premises.
- Colloxylin coating based on nitrocellulose. The material is flexible.
Any of these types has a large number of shades and textures.
How to prepare the base for laying?
First of all, you need to prepare a wooden base.
To do this, you need to examine it. If the details of the floor structure are not affected by mold and have only minor flaws, then the sequence of actions will be as follows:
- The first step is to fix the boards.
- Next, remove the protrusions of the coating. This can be done using a planer or grinder.
- It will be necessary to drown the heads of nails and self-tapping screws, and then putty the formed recesses.
- Cracks, chips and gaps between the floorboards must be repaired with a building mixture. Wide gaps need to be filled with narrow slats, which will need to be pre-prepared.
- At the end, the base should be sanded.
If the wood floor is worn unevenly, there are floorboards with defects, then you will need to lay plywood sheets on the base.
The material should be fixed to the base with self-tapping screws. Further, according to the technology that was described above, you will need to hide all the caps of the fasteners, putty the base, and then sand it.
It is worth knowing that laying linoleum on plywood sheets with your own hands is very simple.
Accordingly, if the preparation of a wooden floor requires a lot of time, then it is best to solve the problem of a defective surface by leveling the base with plywood sheets.
After the preparation work is completed, you will need to clean the base. After that, it will be possible to lay linoleum on a wooden floor.
Leveling the base with a special mixture
To level the base in a simpler way, you will need to use a self-leveling compound. Similar wood flooring mixes can be bought at building supermarkets. With their help, you can even out differences up to 2 cm. However, it is worth remembering that the mixture is liquid, so during the pre-treatment process, you will need to carefully seal all the cracks, ensuring tightness.
The prepared dry floor must be impregnated with a special primer that can enhance the adhesion between the boards and the mixture. The walls near the floor surface should be covered with insulating material.
The junction of the base and walls must be glued with polystyrene foam to create a deformation seam. In the doorway, you need to install a wooden rail that limits the base.
Next, a reinforcing mesh is installed and fixed with a construction stapler to the boards. After that, you need to prepare a solution. The dry mixture should be added to the water, stirring constantly. Next, the floor is poured.
The mixture should be spread evenly with a rubber roller. When the base is dry, you can start laying the coating.
How to install linoleum?
The room temperature must be stable for at least 2 days prior to laying the flooring. The recommended temperature is over 18 °C. The minimum temperature at which laying is allowed is 15°C. The recommended humidity is 45-60%.
Before laying linoleum on a wooden floor, you will need to allow the material to acclimatize in the room. The material should be left for approximately 24 hours. It is important to avoid falling linoleum, you need to make sure that it does not wrinkle.
You should take into account such nuances:
- If several rolls need to be laid in one room, then it is worth making sure that they are from the same batch. If material from different batches is laid, a visual imbalance in the seam area may occur.
- PVC flooring is best laid using the reverse method. The cut strips must be joined by the same sides. This is necessary in order to eliminate differences in color.
- Natural material must be laid in one direction.
Speaking about how to lay linoleum on a wooden floor, you should know that this can be done in several ways:
- Without gluing. This method is the simplest, but it is impractical. It can be used exclusively for small rooms up to 12 m². In this case, carefully leveled material will be pressed around the perimeter with skirting boards.
- With adhesive tape. This laying technology can provide a longer use of the material. The adhesive tape will need to be glued first along the perimeter of the room, after which, in the form of a lattice with a side of about 50 cm, the adhesive tape must be glued along the base of the floor. It is allowed to remove the film from paper from adhesive tape only when linoleum is glued. The film is removed gradually, as the linoleum is laid. It is not allowed to remove the film all at once. Each section of the base will need to be carefully smoothed.
- With adhesive fixation. This option is the most durable. It should be used for covering bases in large rooms.
Laying linoleum with landing on the adhesive mixture
Laying linoleum on a wooden floor with your own hands is done in this way:
- First of all, you will need to mark and cut the coating with a margin of about 5 cm for each side. When the linoleum rests in the room, all excess material must be removed.
- The prepared canvas should be wrapped with the main part up, freeing ½ of the area of the rough base for applying the adhesive mixture.
- With a simple pencil, you need to draw a line on the surface along the wrapped part - this will be the boundary for applying the adhesive mixture.
- Using a notched trowel, you will need to apply the adhesive mixture to the coating.
- After some time, you need to lay the coating on the fixing layer, and then carefully smooth the base with a roller.
- The same actions must be done with the second half of the coating.
If the room is large, then you will need to lay 2 or 3 sheets of linoleum. This complicates the task, but the technology will be the same: first you need to glue and press one half of the coating, then the second. It is worth remembering that each subsequent part must be laid with an overlap of 2 cm. This will allow you to cut 2 edges and eventually get perfect seams.
Cutting joints is carried out 2-3 days after laying the coating.
It is done with a metal ruler and a well-sharpened knife. The resulting seams should be cleaned of the adhesive mixture that has come out and pressed with a board.
If the linoleum strips were glued carefully, then the seams will be invisible. However, it is recommended to completely isolate them. A strong joint can be obtained by hot welding, but at home, cold welding is most often used.
To increase the service life of linoleum, you will need to take care of it in a timely manner. When performing wet cleaning, it is not recommended to use active cleaning agents, as they may crack and fade the coating. For cleaning, special products should be used. Another option is to wash the base with a damp cloth.
To protect linoleum from damage, you need to use mastics and polishes. To prevent scratches, it is recommended to put on soft caps on the legs of furniture elements.
Laying such a coating on wooden floors is very simple. In this case, special attention should be paid to the preparation of the base.
