Patchwork pillow headboard
How to make a patchwork headboard
It's beautiful and original.patchwork headboard, in my opinion, it will look cool in a guest or children's bedroom.
For its manufacture, you can use colorful patterned or plain fabrics. By choosing the appropriate tones, colors and patterns, such a patchwork bed construction can be entered into any existing environment.
And finally, the most important thing is that a patchwork headboard is very easy to make ...
I stumbled upon a similar recipe and took the time to give it a try and I don't regret it.
The example in the photo used green, orange and white fabrics for patchwork pillows, which goes well with the overall color in the bedroom.
Pro making a backrest from patchwork pillows
We will need:
- 2 sheets of 19mm plywood
- Saw, hacksaw or something similar (you can ask your men to cut into squares)
- High density foam.
— Batting
- Glue.
- 1 meter of fabric in each of the four colors
- Scissors
- Stapler and 8mm staples
- Adhesive tape
- Screwdriver and about 35 screws
- Two mounts - hangers on the wall.
To begin with, we cut one sheet of plywood into pieces 200 x 200 or take ready-made ones.
We cut the foam rubber and batting into pieces of 200 x 200 mm.
We cut the fabric into pieces 300 x 300 mm.
Now explanations for the instruction picture:
1 We take a piece of plywood 200 x 200 mm and glue foam rubber on it so that it does not slip.
2. Add a layer of batting and fabric.
3. We get three layers laid face down on the work surface.
4. We tighten the fabric along the edges, first on one side, tuck the excess and punch it with a stapler.
We sip the fabric to a hard - but not too tight surface, first at opposite corners of the pillow. Then we fold the corners and carefully punch through.
We repeat the same from all sides and catch the pillow, making sure not to pull it too hard.
5 We do steps 1-4 and get 40 patchwork pillows.
I want to say that it is easier to work according to the template, so it turns out faster and more convenient.
6. Lay all pillows face down. We twist them around the perimeter so that they do not crumble. Then we take the second uncut piece of plywood, align it and fix each pillow with screws through it. It is necessary to mark the places where to turn the screws and choose a screw number so that they do not pierce the plywood on the pillows through, otherwise you can get hurt later.
And finally, we attach hanging loops to the back wall of the headboard and everything is ready for installation.
If you do not want to hang a patchwork headboard on the wall, you can do it differently. We attach to it two legs a little lower than the bed. And then we just install it between the wall and the regular headboard ...
The original appearance of your bedroom is guaranteed!
The background to the creation of the headboard was as follows. On the one hand, I did not want to pay several thousand euros for an Italian or French bed at all, and on the other hand, I really wanted to create something special. And then it was decided that we would make the bed ourselves. So, I'll show you how the process of creating this beautiful bed went.
I formulated the problem as follows. We need to make a bed with a fairly wide base with a removable cover and a figured headboard.
First, a whole collection of headboards was assembled. After reviewing it, a shortlist was formed, which was analyzed for the complexity of implementation on site. As a result of weighing all the pros and cons, a prototype of the future headboard was chosen.
So, now everything is in order.
1. We ordered a prefabricated MDF bed frame. Previously, two orthopedic bases were transferred to the workshop, bought in Ikea6, the dimensions of which became the starting point for calculating the dimensions.
2. Cut out the shape of the headboard.
3. We dismantle the headboard and proceed to its upholstery. Foam rubber 5 cm thick was pre-cut in the workshop according to a pattern taken from the headboard mold. We impose foam rubber to the headboard and fix it with glue (special glue for foam rubber) in several places.
4. Using a furniture stapler, we nail the edges of the foam rubber to the plywood.
5. We proceed directly to stretching the fabric. We start from the bottom to evenly fix the fabric, then we put the headboard vertically and stretch the fabric. To get around the corners, we cut the fabric.
6. We put the headboard vertically6 check the symmetry and uniformity of the tension of the fabric.
7. Let's get to work with furniture studs. First we upholster the outer edge.
8. We make markings with chalk for the second line of furniture studs. To mark this line, we first pierce it with a furniture stapler.
9. About the line indicated by the stapler, we nail the carnations of the furniture tape.
10. On the reverse side, we close everything with a technical fabric.
11. Getting to the frame. We glue the outer perimeter and the upper surface of the frame with foam rubber.
12. We make a pattern for technical fabric, which will be fixed under a finished removable cover.
13. We nail the technical fabric with a furniture stapler in the upper and lower sides of the frame.
14. We make a pattern of a removable cover.
15. We nail one part of the Velcro to the frame. The second half will be sewn directly to the cover.
16. We check how the cover sits, if necessary, correct it.
A quilted headboard cover can be made from the same fabric as the bedspread and draperies, or try a combination of several different fabrics. If you want the cover to emphasize the strict shape of the headboard, take a non-bright plain satin. The cover will look better if you make a lining of tarp, specially treated against shrinkage, which, however, can be replaced with an old sheet.
To find out what size your headboard is, take a piece of plastic wrap and attach it to the headboard, tracing around the front and back of the headboard with a marker. Then cut out both parts and get the desired size and shape, which can be adjusted depending on what you want to get. We pin the details to the fabric with needles, but remember that this is a natural size and it is necessary to make a seam allowance of 1.5-2 cm.
If your bed is close to the wall, then the back does not have to be made from the main fabric, you can replace it with a cheaper one. Then the front of the cover can be decorated as follows, draw the detail with squares or diamonds. Then, cut out the lining (you can use a padding polyester) and the bottom part, cut off all three parts and stitch along the lines you drew. You can also sew on buttons at the intersection of the lines, after stitching, cover them with the main fabric and sew on, you can sew on rhinestones or beads, as you like.
Next, measure the thickness and length along the top and side edges of your headboard. Now cut a straight strip width = thickness + seam allowance, length = length along the top and side edges + seam allowance. We sew this strip with one side to the main fabric, the other - to the fabric that will be your back.
On the front and back halves of the headboard, do not forget to add 5 cm from the bottom on each piece.
That's it, we turn it inside out and put it on, from below the fabric can be carefully lined with a stapler or hemmed with your hands. Your headboard is ready, really beautiful!!!
The headboard is practically the main decorating detail of the bed. The impact on the environment and the style of the bedroom depends on its appearance. Often there is a desire or need to install a headrest to an existing bed by mounting it on the wall. Such a headboard is made by hand.

Types of backs
There are many headrest options. Each type has its own characteristic differences, more suitable for a particular design style. Consider the entire line of these products:
- Solid wood headboards are the most common and belong to the classics of furniture elements. In shape, they can be rectangular, oval or round, have a fanciful top line, etc. In addition, such backs come in different heights, depending on the user's preferences. The solid surface provides a comfortable feel when in contact with the back.
- Slatted headboards also belong to the classic models. They are distinguished by beauty and grace, but are not very comfortable for the back and head. The pressure is directed to small areas of the skin that are in contact with the slats.
Even with basic skills in working with tools, strictly following the instructions and advice of professionals, you can make a headboard yourself at home in a fairly short time and with a positive result.
Consider how to make a soft headboard for the bed with your own hands.
Materials and tools
Before you make a purchase of materials, you need to decide on the shape and size of the backrest, calculate the consumption of wood, fabric and filler. The standard model will require the following materials:
- A sheet of plywood 16 mm thick, 160 cm wide, 60-70 cm high.
- A sheet of foam rubber with a thickness of at least 6 cm, equal in size to the dimensions of the plywood blank.
- A large canvas of padding polyester, which should exceed the dimensions of the foam rubber by 30 cm on each side.
- Upholstery dense beautiful fabric. The size should also exceed the dimensions of the back by 25-30 cm.
- If you need to decorate the upholstery with a carriage tie, you will need buttons or other consumables suitable for this purpose, including strong thread or twine.
During work you will need:
- An electric jigsaw or hacksaw for making cuts and shaping the plywood into the desired shape.
- Screwdriver or electric drill. Set of drills.
- Furniture stapler.
- Pencil or marker for marking on blanks.
- Measuring tool.
- Stationery knife. Scissors.
- Knitting hook.
- Glue and brush (roller) for coating the surface.
Choosing fabric for headboard upholstery
Tightening the backs is performed with various materials, but preference should be given to denser fabrics. They do not stretch or deform from mechanical stress. The upholstery of beds with leather or its alternative - eco-leather is common. The latter, in terms of its characteristics, is in no way inferior to natural leather, but costs much less.
If knowledge about the properties of fabrics is superficial and does not allow you to rely on the name, you should pull the fabric in different directions right in the store, carefully consider the density of the threads, and feel how thick and strong they are.
The choice of colors is based on the decoration of the room in which the bed will be located, its stylistic orientation. If the headboard is to be the main focus of the bedroom, the colors are bright and different. To create a single composition, contrasts should be avoided.
Sheathing with fabric can occur in different ways. There are several ways that require a number of preparatory work.
If the soft headboard of the bed with your own hands should have the shape of a flat canvas, the tightening process is implemented as follows:
- A layer of glue is applied to the plywood blank and foam rubber is applied. Sewing with a stapler is unacceptable, because the material is deformed and torn.
- A blank of plywood and foam rubber is covered with a padding polyester with a bend of the edges on the back of the product. This layer will prevent abrasion of the filler during contact with the fabric during operation.
- Place the fabric face down on a table or other flat surface. A blank is placed on top of it with plywood up. They are centered relative to each other so that the edges of the matter are the same on all sides.
- Starting from the center, slightly stretching the fabric, we fix the fabric around the entire perimeter, making sure that it does not warp or create wrinkles.
- In order to hide the staples and the edges of the upholstery, a sheet of fiberboard can be attached to the back of the back with short self-tapping screws.
If you plan to fit the headboard using a carriage tie, the process is radically different:
- A plywood blank is marked in several rows at an equal distance from each other in a checkerboard pattern.
- At the marked points, holes are drilled using a drill and a drill with a diameter of 3-5 mm.
- The headboard and foam rubber are connected. Through the holes with a marker, the markup is transferred to the filler with further cutting holes in it with a clerical knife.
- Then follows the process of sheathing with matter, similar to the previous one.
- Armed with nail scissors, you need to probe all the holes and do the same on the fabric.
- Pre-prepared buttons with loops of strong twine threaded into the ears are placed on the front side. They push the hook towards them, grab the thread and pull it to the back.
- Pulling the button to the base as much as possible, the thread is fixed on the plywood with a bracket.
The finished headboard is installed in the place intended for it.
If desired, you can update the entire bed, creating a piece of furniture that is integral in appearance and style. The knowledge and skills that were gained while making a soft headboard on your own are applicable in this case. Therefore, questions about how to sheathe a bed should not arise.
What do you do with old furniture?
The first thing we see, barely stepping over the threshold of the bedroom, is the bed. And on how stylishly it is decorated, it also depends on whether we will be comfortable in the room. Bed linen, its material and style, the presence or absence canopy- all these are important components of the overall impression of the bedroom. But still, the main role belongs to the beautiful headboard - it is it that can radically change the appearance of your bed, and the whole room as a whole.
Let's talk about the types of headboards for the bed
How many styles - so many design options for headboards.
wooden headboard rightfully considered a classic of the "sleeping" genre. Depending on how the wood is processed, the bed can organically fit into almost any style - from the bedroom in the good old Victorian style to modern and shabby chic. Ascetic headboards are usually practically devoid of decor, they have a rectangular or slightly rounded shape, are varnished or painted. More sophisticated options a la Provence can be decorated with wavy patterns, and their most luxurious counterparts (baroque, rococo, classic and empire beds) are real works of art. Beds with high headboard- the hallmark of sophisticated chic bedrooms.
Idea: If you have boards or old carved shutters or doors, you can install them as a headboard. In the first case, this will give the room an eco-atmosphere, in the second, it will create a vintage spirit.
metal headboard - Another old-timer in the bed realm. It is actively exploited by many trends in design - from romantic vintage and Romanesque style to strict Scandinavian.
Mosaic and stone headboards. These can be bizarre patterns of sea pebbles or pieces of glass, fragments ceramic tiles and so on.
Textile used to decorate the head of the bed quite often. The reason for such popularity lies, most likely, in the atmosphere of comfort that the fabric brings to the room. And the richness of the choice of the desired fabric also plays a role: heavy velvet is suitable for decorating a baroque or rococo bed, but for empire rooms it is better to give preference to a shiny golden satin.
Headboard in the form of a mirror - it will suit you only if you are not an adherent of feng shui, since any more or less savvy connoisseur of the principles of this Taoist practice will tell you that the mirror needs to be placed elsewhere.
How to decorate a wall in place of a headboard
If you bought a bed devoid of an unusual headboard, there are two options - either you are content with its absence, but somehow decorate the wall above the bed in an interesting way, or make the headboard yourself. For craftsmen who are used to holding a jigsaw and a furniture stapler in their hands, the matter will turn out to be small - just come up with a suitable decor option and execute it. But for those who are unfamiliar with this technique, we have an easier way - to decorate the wall above the bed.
- Very stylish as a substitute for a headboard look like drawings made through curly stencils. They can be both flat and voluminous, that is, made with putty.
- You can also decorate the wall with purchased self-adhesive film patterns. This is one of the easiest options for decorating a bed.
Advice: Athletes and sports fans can show their imagination: stick hockey sticks on the wall, create intricate patterns from light balls for tennis or pucks.
New, original, creative. This design of the headboard for the bed will definitely arouse the interest of guests.
The bed is the main and central piece of furniture in any bedroom.
People spend about a third of their lives in a dream, which means that the choice of a bed and bedding must be approached seriously and responsibly. Designers are constantly creating innovative models of mattresses and beds, so there is a huge variety of bedroom interior furnishings. Most of them not only fulfill the main purpose of providing a person with a comfortable sleep, but also help to decorate the interior, giving it a certain style and originality.
Installing or updating a headboard is the quickest and easiest way to transform the overall mood of a bedroom. Among the different options, the most popular is a soft headboard for the bed, which, by virtue of its design, gives the sleeping place a special cosiness, softens sharp corners, and sets up for a comfortable rest. Of course, this item can be purchased in stores separately or as an element of the bed frame, but many people prefer to make a soft headboard with their own hands, giving free rein to imagination and creative ideas. We offer several workshops on how to make an interesting headboard, and also look at other models of craftsmen and designers for inspiration.
Do-it-yourself soft headboard "Carriage coupler"
Carriage tie is a decoration method that was widely used in the 18th century to decorate carriages (hence the name). Today, this method is used for upholstery of upholstered furniture and interior items. The modern name for the carriage screed is capito. In order for the result to look really impressive, it is recommended to use expensive, rich material that looks good with numerous folds, such as leather, velvet, velor, faux suede. Light cotton with a small flower is a completely inappropriate fabric.
The tie pattern itself can be made in the form of squares or rhombuses; buttons covered with the same fabric, beads, crystals in color or in contrast are used as rivets.
Materials and tools:
- plywood for the base (furniture board);
- high-quality fabric (with a margin, 25-30 cm more than the length and width of the plywood base);
- foam rubber about 5 cm thick (according to the size of the plywood sheet);
- synthetic winterizer;
- covered buttons with eyelet;
- drill for drilling plywood;
- sharp knife;
- Crochet hook;
- glue universal;
- strong lace (rope, twine, so that the buttons go into the eyelet);
- furniture stapler with thickened brackets;
- scissors;
- wall mounts and screws.
Progress
Take a sheet of plywood, you can use a rectangular one or cut an interesting shape. In this example, two boards are used: 200 cm by 60 cm and 140 cm by 60 cm. Cut the foam to fit the plywood base. Mark on the foam rubber the attachment points of the buttons, for example, in three rows in a checkerboard pattern.
An interesting way to make holes is to use a heated metal tube. Heat the tube on the stove for 3-4 minutes, then make holes with quick movements. At one time it will be possible to make 2-3 holes, then heat the tube again for 15-20 seconds. Before this, be sure to put a board under the foam rubber so as not to spoil the floor.
Lay the foam on the plywood and mark the holes with a pencil. Drill holes with a 8mm wood drill bit.
Glue the foam to the plywood. Make sure that the holes on the foam rubber and in the plywood match.
Place a layer of synthetic winterizer on top with a margin of 3-5 cm on each side. Lay the fabric on the synthetic winterizer with a margin of at least 10 cm on each side. Turn the plywood over and secure the fabric with a furniture stapler from the back.
Prepare your buttons. You can cover them with fabric yourself or take them to the workshop. Thread a string at least 15 cm long into each button and tie a knot. For this project, 62 buttons were needed. Take a crochet hook and put it through the hole from the side of the plywood.
In front, from the side of the fabric, feel for the hook. Check the distance from the adjacent button with a ruler and make a small hole with nail scissors. Crochet the cord with the button and thread it through the hole.
Pull the cord tight and staple it securely to the back.
Attach with self-tapping screws and hang on the wall. Ready!
Upholstered headboard with nailhead pattern
Materials and tools:
- plywood sheet;
- a piece of dense fabric (in this project, a canvas for paintings was used);
- nails;
- glue (spray glue was used in the project);
- synthetic winterizer or batting;
- scissors;
- furniture stapler.
Progress
Cut out a rectangle of the desired size from a sheet of plywood.
Lay 3-4 layers of batting or synthetic winterizer, leaving a margin of 10 cm on the sides.
Using spray adhesive, glue the first layer of batting to the plywood, then the next layers to the previous one.
Attach the batting with staples to the back side, pulling the material well.
Flip the headboard over. Spray the surface of the batting with spray adhesive and, starting on one side, gently roll the fabric over the batting. Press well and smooth the fabric so that there are no bubbles, wrinkles or distortions.
Once the glue has dried, attach the canvas to the back of the plywood. Stretching the canvas well, wrap it around the frame and secure with a furniture stapler.
With the help of nails, you can make any ornament, including imitating a carriage tie. For this head of the bed, a neat thin frame was made around the perimeter. To do this, mark with a pencil two points in adjacent corners at an equal distance from the sides.
Drive the carnations in there, but not completely, but so that it sticks out above the surface. Tie a string around the head of one nail, stretch and tie around the second. So we made a straight line so as not to draw on a light fabric with a pencil.
Then, with a pencil along the line, mark the places for driving in nails at an equal distance from each other. Make small marks that the nail head will cover.
Hammer in the nails. Instead of nails, you can use furniture buttons.
Attach the headboard to the wall with the fasteners.
Do-it-yourself soft headboard with pillows, tile imitation
Materials and tools:
- a large rectangular plywood sheet for the base (in the project 150 cm by 75 cm);
- small plywood squares (for this project it took 18 pieces measuring 25 by 25 cm);
- piece of fabric;
- synthetic winterizer;
- furniture stapler;
- scissors;
- glue.
Progress
Prepare plywood pieces. In the big building supply stores, you can ask to have your plywood cut to size. Cut a piece of fabric into 18 squares (it may be a different number in your case). Squares should be with a margin of 5-10 cm on each side.
Lay the plywood squares in the middle of the fabric.
Using a furniture stapler, attach the edges of one side. Be careful that the staple does not go through the plywood with the fabric. You can insert the staples slightly at an angle.
Make a crease in the corner, stretch the fabric well and secure the corner with staples.
So, you have fixed one side and two corners, making it look like a "pocket". Now, adding a staple on each side, fill the space between the plywood and the fabric with batting or synthetic winterizer. Try to have practically no filler closer to the edges, and a plump “slide” in the middle.
After filling the square with padding polyester and securing the sides, fasten the last remaining side and corners in the same way with staples.
Do the same for the rest of the squares. If the fabric has a pattern, try to keep it the same on all parts. You can also use different fabrics to create a multi-colored mosaic composition.
When all the squares are ready, lay them on a large sheet of plywood and glue them with all-purpose glue. Follow the correct location of the pattern. Try not to have a large distance between the squares, the joints should be barely noticeable.
