It's all about the glossy finish of the smartphone. The only one from the new line, Droid Ultra is available in red. The 3D textured finish on the caseback (which comes in red or black) is eye-catching and tactile, while hiding the Kevlar material underneath. But, due to the fact that the phone is glossy, there are almost immediately a large number of very noticeable fingerprints on it, both on the front and on the back. Regarding the display, it's not a big problem, but it does give the Droid Ultra a rather sloppy look instead of a futuristic-looking smartphone.
Even though the Motorola Droid Ultra runs on nearly stock Android Jelly Bean, the smartphone features physical Home, Back, and Recent Apps buttons rather than being controlled strictly on the display. This is somewhat surprising considering that Google now owns Motorola, but it's nothing to complain about.
The Droid Ultra's bright and vibrant 5-inch AMOLED display is stunning, boasting stunning pixel density with wide viewing angles. Further enhancing the screen experience is a new feature from Motorola: Active Display. When the Droid Ultra is lying on a flat surface, all it takes is a slight nudge to make it show the time. What about other notifications? You just need to press and hold the corresponding icon to see the text and decide whether you want to open or ignore the notification. Active Display uses white text, thus highlighting only the pixels you need, saving battery power. AMOLED displays illuminate only the pixels they need, resulting in darker, deeper blacks around text than other displays.
Droid Ultra also has a large number of small but interesting built-in features. Not as many as the Galaxy S IV, but enough to show that Motorola is paying attention to trends without slavishly following them like other manufacturers.
