The results of the study, which was carried out by a group of scientists from Kanisius College (New York), confirmed that almost all people who are in a dying state see their deceased relatives or friends.
The phenomenon known as "visions or dreams of the dying" has been known for a long time and, despite the difference in cultures, the documented facts are practically indistinguishable. The representative of the group of researchers did not give any refutations on the facts known as paranormal, but only confirmed that this is just a brain game. At the same time, the main version of the influence of "vision or dreams of the dying", which is on a person who is on the brink of death, was expressed.
It was found that these visions have a positive effect on the psyche of a person who is preparing for death, as well as the fact that such visions help to more calmly accept the inevitable. Obviously, the answer to the question: why do people before death see people who were close to them, but have already left this world, is hidden in the complacency of a person who knows that these are his last hours or minutes.
Scientists came to this conclusion through everyday conversations with 66 patients who knew that their life path ends. Patients said that they see dead people as reality, this frightened and calmed them at the same time. This is a really sharp contrast - fear and peace.
Most of the patients interviewed reported that, as a rule, their visions were associated with soothing, soulful conversations. Their relatives and friends seemed to turn to them from another world and asked them not to be afraid of what awaited them. This really calms the person down, and he ceases to be afraid of the very fact of death.
"Visions can appear for months, weeks, days or even hours before death, and are mainly aimed at getting rid of the fear of death, which helps in the transition to those who come.", the researchers write in their report.

21. Visions of Death
A new idea is first ridiculed, then forgotten as a matter of course, until finally it becomes something that everyone knows.
William James
Visions of death were rarely mentioned in the scientific literature until the late 1920s, when they were studied by William Barrett, professor of physics at the Royal College of Science, Dublin.
Barrett became seriously interested in the topic after his wife, an obstetrician surgeon, once told him about a woman who died that day in the hospital from blood loss after giving birth.
Just before her death, this woman, Doris, suddenly sat up in bed, unusually excited to see some magnificent landscape, and then suddenly announced that her father had come for her to accompany her to the "other side."
Barrett was extremely shocked by the fact that the woman was suddenly surprised to see, together with her father, her sister Vida, who had died just three weeks ago: since Doris was very sick, the death of her beloved sister was hidden from her.
Barrett was so inspired by this story that he began a systematic study of near-death visions. This was the first scientific experiment to establish that the consciousness of a dying patient often remains clear and rational. Barrett also reported on numerous occasions in which William Barrett's medical staff or attending relatives saw visions of a dying person.
Barrett's book, published in 1926, is called Deathbed Visions. On its pages, he writes that:
Many times at the time of their death, people observed the ghost of a friend or relative at the bedside, believing that this is a living person;
In all cases, it was established that the person (or rather, his ghost), whom these people observed, had already died, and they did not know it;
Dying children were often surprised that the waiting angels they saw did not have wings.
In the 1960s, Dr. Karlis Osis of the American OPI conducted an experimental study of the vision of the dying, which fully confirmed Barrett's data and was subsequently tested in the conditions of various national cultures.
Osis found that:
The most common type of vision is the ghosts of people who have already died;
Dying visions usually lasted no more than five minutes;
Dying patients stated unequivocally that the ghosts came to take them with them;
belief other world does not in any way affect the frequency of appearance or the appearance of the seen ghost;
Most of the patients observed did not receive drugs that could cause hallucinations.
In 1977, Dr. Osis and his colleague Dr. Erlenddur Haraldsson published At the Hour of Death. This book expanded on the original research and contained reports from approximately 1,000 doctors and nurses in India and the United States. The book contains information on the deaths of more than one hundred thousand people. All these studies are fully consistent with the first studies carried out over 30 years and reflected in several works of Dr. Robert Crookall in England.
According to information he received from medical personnel:
Only ten percent of people were conscious shortly before death;
In this group, one-half to two-thirds of those observed had similar near-death visions;
These visions took the form of ghosts of loved ones, fleeting visions of the other world and caused a medically inexplicable state of euphoria.
Dr. Melvin Morse claims that the French historian Philippe Aries documented that before AD 1000, the dying spoke of seeing God and seeing those who had already died. Morse complains that today patients who have such visions are treated for "anxiety" with drugs and Valium, which erase short-term memory and prevent patients from remembering any visions that may have visited them (Morse 1993: 60). He also argues that about ninety percent of people who die in hospitals are "repeatedly resuscitated and medicated," and that doctors consider vision to be a disease that must be treated (Morse 1993: 63).
In his book Closer to the Light. Closer to the Light. Learning from the Near-Death Experiences of Children Morse hypothesizes that near-death visions are a "forgotten aspect of the mysterious process of life" and that they can have powerful calming and healing effects on a dying person, and for his family (Morse 1993: 65). He lists several cases in which dying children saw visions of the other world during the last few days of their lives. Children described amazing colors, beautiful places and their long-dead relatives, whom they could not have known during their lifetime.
These are not hallucinations
Dr. Osis himself suggested that these sensations were simply hallucinations caused by the biochemical effects of the dying brain. However, after conducting careful research, the scientist realized that these sensations were so unusual and convincing that they could not be explained either by the patient's physical condition or the consequences of the treatment.
The OPI report cites cases where a ghost was seen by one or more people at the bedside of a dying person.
In one detailed case, a ghost was seen by a dying woman, Harriet Pearson, and three caring relatives (Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, Feb. 1904: 185-187).
In another case, at the bedside of a dying man little boy two witnesses independently observed his recently deceased mother (Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research, Volume 6, p. 20).
Deathbed visions confirm other evidence for the existence of life after death. Of those who die in consciousness, fifty to sixty percent see visions of the other world.
The important role of dying visions
In his book Parting Vision (1994), Melvin Morse states that:
Family members who are aware of near-death visions are known to spend more time at the bedside of a dying person. This factor reduces the guilt they may feel after his death;
Spiritual visions reduce the patient's fear of death and bring significant relief to his relatives;
Spiritual visions can prevent mental exhaustion in medical personnel;
If the vision is given the proper attention, it can drastically reduce unnecessary medical procedures, which are often painful for the patient. It is known that 30-60% of the funds allocated to American health care are spent in the last few days of a person's life, and "most of them are spent on meaningless procedures that cannot prolong life" (Morse 1994: 136).
Carla Wills-Brandon, M.A., Ph.D., psychologist, lawyer and author of six published books, took a serious interest in visions before her death when it happened to her three-year-old son. The boy was visited by a ghost who informed him that he was here to take him and his grandfather with him; the child was sure that it was actually his dad. In her book One Last Hug Before I Go: The Mystery and Meaning of Death Bed Visions, Carla Wills-Brandon not only revisits Barrett and Osis' research, but also analyzes many recent studies. And here are her findings.
Science is unable to explain these phenomena.
Deathbed visions have existed since time immemorial.
These events indicate the existence of life after death.
It is our lot to study them.

There is only one thing in the whole world about which people know practically nothing - that is death. No one has yet managed to return from there. Unless, of course, you do not count those people who survived clinical death and were able to return back. Many do not believe in their stories about what they saw THERE. But no one can refute anything either. Moreover, many of the details are strikingly convergent.
Some people may have a premonition of their death. Someone seems to warn the person, give him signs that speak of an imminent death, so that you have time to prepare, manage to correct something, ask for forgiveness, complete some deeds, repent of your sins.
And sometimes there are cases when higher forces warn a person, trying to make him understand that it is not time for him yet, but the road along which he is going is false and it leads him precisely to death.
In the legends of many peoples of the world, there are stories about strange, inexplicable messengers of death. Ghosts, mysterious sounds, unusual animals.
Let's figure it out a bit
The messengers of death how to understand them, how to understand that the events that occurred on the eve of death warned a person about imminent death and tragedy.Many people see hallucinations before death. In fact, these visions are reality. They most often see a woman in white robes, with a wreath on her head and a rod in her hand.
There is such a belief - if a bride kisses in a dream, it means that death itself kissed you. This goddess of death controls the process of transmigration of souls. Vanga often said that she saw the goddess of death moving along the tops of trees. And when Wang was asked how she defines life and death, she said, this goddess looks beautiful, in light clothes, and not in a black hood with a braid, which they used to portray. The black woman with the scythe is the goddess of illness, for which Death almost always comes.
The harbinger of imminent death can come through dreams.
The symbol of death is a falling tree, a tree uprooted, or a falling ceiling in a house where a funeral will be soon, or a dream in which you leave the house naked. If you go home naked, this is a disease. Loss of teeth - to the illness of relatives, and if teeth rot or meat - to a serious illness. You need to understand what dreams are connected with. For example, water is life, clothes on the body are protection, and if there is no clothes, then the body is not protected.
Very often, the messengers of imminent death is the arrival of deceased relatives who call with them, stretching out their hand, or lead them. In no case should you follow them. I dreamed that you were sweeping dirty linen from the hut - to the deceased in the house. As you know, litter, garbage (that is, everything that has become obsolete)
I dreamed of a log taken out of the wall - to the deceased. The roots of signs go back to those days when the dead were taken out of the house not through the door, but through a window or even through a hole specially cut in the wall.
I saw freshly dug earth or a hole in the ground and fresh boards in a dream - you will soon bury someone. This sign is based on the law of similarities: a pit is a grave dug in the ground; boards - a coffin made from fresh boards.
Likewise, deceased relatives or friends who came in a dream can warn a person that he will soon die or that there will be a tragedy. They can also be sent in order to prevent this tragedy, to prevent a person from committing one or another act.
Physical signs of imminent death.
For example, if a bird knocks on a window, a sparrow, a swallow will fly into a house, a crow will hit a window, or if a tree you have planted falls or breaks, a dog howls before the death of a person - it has been proven that a dog can see a certain substance that provokes the death of a person.
Cat - will hold dead soul and will protect the living. The importance of the cat in communication between the worlds remains very significant. She is able to prevent evil spirits from entering the life of a living person, and to heal, if required. True, not every cat is capable of this. It is necessary that she loved her master, and wanted him to be always there. But she will not lead anyone to the afterlife. Conducts, and that's all. But if an entity tries to enter your life, then the cat will be able to protect you from such an impact. Very often, in the fight against wickedness, a cat can give its life for its owner.
The coffin is larger than the deceased - to another deceased. Since the coffin is considered the home of the deceased, the extra space in it from ancient times suggested that it was intended for another person.
Funeral in New Year- a very bad omen: in the coming year, they will be buried at least once a month.
If 3 knocks are heard in a row in the room where the patient is lying, he will not survive. The same - if a white-breasted bird appears near the room
The icon fell or cracked - wait for misfortune and the deceased in the house
Insect invasion - it is not known where insects appear in a well-kept house, a harbinger of trouble or death.
Also, a rather bright harbinger of the fact that this year a funeral will be given to a person at Christmas - for example, the appearance of a butterfly in the house on Christmas Day, suggests that soon there will be a deceased in the house.
But from a medical point of view
- it has long been noticed that signs of death cover not only the very moment of a person's death, but also several days before. A person's appearance changes - the shine in the eyes is lost, the skin becomes dull and dark, the eyes fall, the nose becomes sharp, the person's face becomes symmetrical before death - in medicine this is a confirmed fact and is called the "Hippocratic mask", the bridge of the nose itches to the death of a loved one - indeed, a change in the biofield of a person has been recorded, which in the region of the nose bridge receives signals of an impending disaster.If a doctor comes to a patient and stumbles, it means that the doctor will not help him. If you ask a patient how he feels, and he answers - “terrible”, this is to recovery, and if he says that it is good, it means to death, it is noticed that before death an incurably ill person becomes well. He can get out of bed, he can walk, rejoice, even go out to the robot, but all this is temporary. Why and why it is so difficult to answer this question, but it is so.
Premonition of death
Also, one should not lose sight of the fact that a person feels his death - that is indeed the case: any person guesses about his imminent death. For example, if a couple of days or a couple of hours before his death, a person, without realizing that, met with everyone, talked to everyone, asked everyone for forgiveness and, as it were, said goodbye to everyone. Not typical human behavior in everyday life. And after a while an accident may occur - an accident or any other accidental death (I am now talking not about intentional suicide, but about the accidental, sudden death of a person). A person always unconsciously feels his end.
The same confirmed facts are the harbingers of death are the Doubles that a person sees. They can also be seen by people nearby. as a rule, already such precursors are not turning events and always an imminent lethal outcome. I can cite such examples from the life of the two Empresses Catherine II and Anna Ioannovna Romanov, as well as Elizabeth I of England, the doubles, the forerunners, came to Lenin and Stalin.
The separation of the double takes place in a dream, during an illness, during a stressful situation, that is, when a person's consciousness does not function in a completely normal mode - muffled or, on the contrary, extremely aggravated.
But you can read about doubles harbingers in the article below "Doubles - harbingers of death" ....
Death signs can neither be refuted nor confirmed. In order to say something concrete, you need to go there yourself. So what do you do? Live, believe, love and follow the rules.
Dying visions
A person's departure to another world is often accompanied by the appearance in front of him of people, landscapes of amazing beauty, mythological or religious images, etc.
The first to try to study these phenomena at the beginning of the last century was the English physicist, as well as the famous researcher of paranormal phenomena, William Barrett.
The scientist's interest in this phenomenon appeared in 1924, when his wife, an obstetrician, once told him about one of her patients, who, a few days before her death, told her that she had seen amazingly beautiful places, as well as her father and sister, who already was not alive for a long time.
Moreover, the woman perceived these dying visions as absolutely real. And apparently, they fascinated her so much that when they brought her her newly born child, she suddenly whispered: “I cannot stay here. If you saw what I saw, you would do the same. "
Most of all, Barrett in this story was surprised that the woman in labor, as it turned out later, about death own sister, who died shortly before the described events, nothing was known. And yet she stated that she saw her ghost along with the ghost of her father.
For a long time, none of the scientists paid attention to Barrett's research, considering them pseudoscientific and of no special value. It was only in the late 50s - early 60s of the last century that the American parapsychologist Dr. Karlis Osis became interested in them.
Over the course of several years in the United States and India, he collected more than 3,600 facts confirming the existence of deathbed visions and dying sensations.
The results obtained in the course of this work confirmed the research of Barrett, as well as other psychiatrists and psychologists working on this topic.
Typically, near-death visions appear in those patients who die slowly, for example, from an incurable illness or severe wounds. And as a rule, with sudden death, they do not appear.
Death is often accompanied by visions of amazingly beautiful landscapes, mythological or religious images.
Most often, ghosts of deceased relatives appear on the deathbed: parents, children, brothers or sisters, husband or wife. Sometimes, on the eve of death, religious images or deities appear: angels, Jesus, Virgin Mary, Krishna, etc.
These visions, most likely, facilitate the transition of the dying person to another world. Their appearance gives dying people a feeling of extraordinary happiness, especially among people who sincerely believe in the existence of an afterlife.
It was noticed that in a patient who is in a depressed state or experiencing excruciating pain, after the visions, the mood changes dramatically for the better. Moreover, sometimes their pain even disappears for a while.
Analysis of dying visions shows that about a third of them are represented by pictures of an unearthly world, which seems quite real to a dying person. In this new world, he sees endless meadows or gardens, rivers, bridges, as well as palaces or other architectural structures of amazing beauty. Occasionally, ghosts and spirits may be present in the other world.
The consequence of this visit is a new wonderful world there is a feeling of happiness from moving closer to these wonderful places.
True, Osis once faced the fact when a dying woman saw something that looked like hell. But, as the researcher says, apparently, her conscience was burdened with a huge load of sins.
In the course of research on this phenomenon, it was found that near-death visions usually last for a short time: about half of them appear in front of the dying person for about 5 minutes, 17% take 6 to 15 minutes of time, and about 17% stretch for more than an hour.
And usually death images appear a few minutes before leaving for another world. So, about 76% of all patients died within 10 minutes after the vision appeared in front of them, the rest after that lived for several more hours.
Based on the above studies, Osis came to the conclusion that the appearance or absence of visions almost does not depend on the physical condition of the patient.
There are facts when a practically recovered person had visions and after that he suddenly fell into a coma and died.
To explain this fairly widespread phenomenon, scientists have put forward several hypotheses.
So, some of them try to explain the near-death visions by completely natural reasons: the effect on the brain of drugs, high temperature the body, hallucinations resulting from the disease, oxygen starvation of the brain, etc.
There is no doubt that all these factors can contribute to the appearance of all kinds of hallucinations. However, Osis found that near-death visions usually appear in patients who are fully conscious. And it is impossible to explain the appearance of pictures surprising in terms of clarity only by those natural reasons, which were mentioned above.

She doesn't ask age and gender, but "knocking on the door", it would seem, at the most inopportune moment.
But what happens before death, how does a person feel the approach of the end? Unfortunately, the answers to this question have not yet been found, since, as is known, no one has ever returned from the other world. Of course, there are no facts, but there are a great many assumptions, and they are uttered mainly by soothsayers, sorcerers, shamans and magicians. Believing their words is also doubtful, since there are too many charlatans.
And, nevertheless, the question of what people see before death is still acute. Many who have experienced clinical death share what they have seen and felt. However, their stories are somewhat different from each other, but the essence is the same.
First story. One person who experienced clinical death was able to return to a full life, and when asked what he saw at that moment, he told a traditional story that can be watched on TV. This is the light at the end of the tunnel. He said that at first he was in the darkness and did not know where to go next, but then he began to notice a flickering light ahead of him. The flame was so beautiful and attractive that the legs themselves led to it. When very little remained before him, the patient regained consciousness and learned that all this time he was considered dead for medical reasons.
Second story. Another man, who had been in a coma for six months, told everyone that he had been in the hospital ward all this time, but no one had seen or heard him. He looked at himself from the sidelines and tried to attract everyone's attention, but again in vain. Then he did not think, before the death of whom they see, because according to his inner perception he considered himself absolutely healthy. He was only interested in one question, why is he not noticed, and how long will it last? Perhaps his movement around the hospital ward would have continued, if not for an unexpected exit from a coma.
Third story. The third person, whose heart stopped for a few seconds during the operation, said during his long rehabilitation that for a few moments he saw his late grandmother, who held out her hands to him. At first he began to move in her direction, but then some unknown force returned him to the body and forced him to breathe. He is sure that people see before the death of their relatives and friends of the deceased, which is why sometimes they simply refuse to fight for their own lives.
So the opinions of people on this topic differ, but there is a category of patients who are simply sure that there is no life after death, so a person cannot see anyone before it arrives, but simply closes his eyes and dies, as if he is falling asleep. This opinion also has a right to exist, especially since the rest have not yet found their real confirmation.
The study of the afterlife is the science in which there is always a lot of unknown and unsolved. For example, it is still unknown what people see before death, where they go immediately after its arrival, and where they pass the eternity in the future. In addition, all kinds of reality shows and mystical television programs, which also put forward their versions of what a person sees before death, are even more misleading. So it is not clear who and what to believe, and where simply not to pay attention to the next nonsense.
Scientists are still concerned about this issue, so they do not stop their numerous studies, which so far have not yielded positive results. Probably, only the person who, on one unfavorable day, meets death face to face, knows the correct answer; but, alas, it is no longer possible to ask him about this.
So who do people see before death, and what do such visions mean? Although this topic has not yet been fully studied, it presents to all those interested in a huge number of assumptions, opinions and hypotheses.
